Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,
My name is Valerie Reagan Mott and my student number is 10181002. I am appealing for credit standing in Biology 103 that I completed in the winter semester of 2016. I am appealing due to extenuating circumstances that were out of my control.
The extenuating circumstances were chronic illnesses in which I had a major acute flare up that led to other complications. I am diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Migraines. I was prescribed by my neurologist a beta blocker called Nadol for my migraines that was very effective for a while, but it made my heart rate drop to low and I was experiencing chest palpitations. I had to go to Kingston General Hospital and I was informed it was lower than 50bpm. This was dangerous to my health so I had to get off the medication right away, which unfortunately was right before exams. After ceasing Nadol my migraines came back full force. I had an acute flare up, which severely impacted my ability to study. I had a severe migraine for a couple days (April 4th and 5th) so I took Tylenol three that was prescribed to me to cope with the pain. I had a severe allergic reaction to the codeine in Tylenol three and was vomiting for 3 days (April 5th- 8th). This reaction on top of my migraines and fibromyalgia made me unable to study for a 6-7 day period (April 4th- 10th/11th) right before and during some of my exams. I was unable to study due to vomiting, migraines, fatigue and an inability to concentrate because of the pain. This impacted my biology exam more than others because I had previously studied for some of my earlier exams but had not yet studied much for biology, as it was my last exam at 7pm on April 13th. Biology was my fourth exam in a three day period so even when I was feeling better I didn¿¿t have time to study because I had an exam at 9am on the 11th, 12th and 13th. Without this time to study I was unable to prepare for my exam properly.
I am currently working with my family doctor, a neurologist and a pain team at sick kids hospital to manage my fibromyalgia and migraines. My family doctor has set me up with a gynecologist to switch my birth control method to a lower dose hormone method to try and reduce my migraines. I also have an appointment with my neurologist to discuss other possible medications to reduce my migraines in the future. In addition, I am meeting with sick kids to switch over to a Fibromyalgia specialist in order to find methods to cope with the pain and possible therapies to help manage it as well. Furthermore, I am starting physical therapy to reduce some of my fibromyalgia pain and learn exercises to strengthen trigger areas and joints. I am also going to massage therapy to help relax some of the muscles around the 18 trigger points and my joints to ease fibromyalgia pain. I may still get flare-ups in the future but we are attempting every method possible to minimize this. I appreciate your time in the consideration of my request to appeal for credit standing in Biology 103.
Thanks,
Valerie Reagan Mott (10181002)
