Appeal Letter - Withdrawal For A Minimum Of 3 Years
Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
My name is Travis Perrin and I am appealing the Faculty¿¿s decision that I must withdraw from Queen¿¿s for a minimum of three years. I asked that this be waived due to the improvements I made this year with my grades and study habits.
I have been attending Queen¿¿s University since 2012/13 and I was asked to withdraw from studies during the academic year of 2014/15. I returned in the fall of 2015 for studies this past year, and made significant improvements. During the 2013/14 academic period I received grades consisting of F, F, F, D+, D+ which I acknowledge is unacceptable academic performance. The 2014/15 year I lived in Kingston and watched all my friends progress and be able to graduate with their respective 2016 classes. This was a major reality check and I returned to studies determined to better myself at studying and succeeding in school like my peers. I retook the courses I failed and some new courses, and succeeded for the most part. My grades this past academic year were C-, C-, C-, D+, D+, F. Although I failed a class this year, my individual GPAs from 2013/14 to 2015/16 went from 0.4 to 1.5. The Academic Probation laws state that if a student is returning to studies, then they will be monitored and their GPA for the coming academic session must exceed 1.9. My GPA wasn¿¿t that close to 1.9 but a 1.1 jump during one year of studies is a great improvement.
Having a future plan and academic plan is the biggest key for this appeal and I want to show that I will keep improving as a student and person. This year after returning from a 1 year withdrawal I made a huge improvement to my time management and studying habits. In the upcoming year for 2016/2017 I plan to improve even further. This year I promised myself I would study at least three hours everyday minimum even if I had no work to do, I would review notes and problems. It worked out for the most part. Next year I plan to do this as well and also instead of walking back to my house during the day I plan to stay on campus all day and use the library and all the learning facilities for assistance. Joining study groups for my classes and getting a tutor for MATH281 are only two of the things I am going to do next year to ensure further success. I am not making excuses, but MATH281 is an entirely different type of math and has a reputation for being one of the hardest courses at Queen¿¿s according to the professor who teaches it. Also, when it comes to exams and tests I get nervous and my mind blanks, which hurts my grades even further. To deal with this, I plan to use study groups before studying for exams to ensure I am confident with everything I¿¿ve learned. Also I plan to use the stress relieve events that the school has before exams to try and help me relax and not stress too much about my upcoming exams.
