Petition Letter
June 11th, 2016
Hello Dr. Bénard,
I am writing this letter to appeal to waive my requirement to withdraw for one year, due to personal mental health problems that have strongly affected my ability to consistently focus on assigned work and deadlines. Near the end of January of this year, I sought out counseling because I had no motivation to succeed academically, as well as socially. Although I have struggled with some anxiety throughout my academic career, this year I found it extremely difficult to cope with the anxiety of meeting deadlines, and turned to substance abuse in my struggles. To the point where I was missing assignments and tests altogether because I could not handle the stress. The more I feel behind in my studies, the harder it was for me to try to catch up because I would become overwhelmed with the workload I had ahead of me and would have to stop working in order to calm down to often to get any real work completed.
Through counseling, and the time I have spent back home already this summer, I have begun to better understand both my problem, and ways I can cope with it. I have also made great steps in overcoming my substance abuse problem, made easier by stepping away from the academic stress for over a month now. I intend to continue to seek help from the counseling services in September until I get back to a positive mental state, a healthy lifestyle, and to being a successful student. I am requesting a wave of my requirement to withdraw for one year because I sought out help too late to turn my courses around this past year, but I know, come September, I will be a better person by overcoming these obstacles, and do better for myself going forward.
Thank you for your time,
