Petition Letter
To the Associate Dean of Arts and Science,
I am requesting to wave the 21-day rule for submitting an appeal
I was not able to submit and appeal on time due to ongoing medical issues relating to a traumatic incident that happened during this past Winter term of 2016 this extenuating circumstance was out of my control. In February I was sexually assaulted by a classmate, thus this resulted in ongoing harassment by this individual throughout the rest of the semester, this has not only impacted my academics within the classroom and my activities within my program¿¿s department, but it has impacted all other aspects of my life outside of my academics. This traumatic incident has led to a severe incident in which I was hospitalized for in April. Thorough this time, I was not able to complete writing any of my final exams. During the time of exams up until now (mid-June) I have been meeting with different doctors and taking some time to figure out which treatment option and which medications are right for me. Up until a week ago, I have started a structured treatment plan in which I will be seeing someone from Sexual Assault and domestic violence center at KGH, I have just had a structured plan on treatment in Behavioural Cognitive Therapy, it has taken a while to find a specific regimen that can help me get back on me feet. As well as working with doctors to move on from the incident. This is an incident that has impacted my life in many ways and has resulted me to change my lifestyle completely. I understand that I have missed the deadline to submit an appeal regarding my incompletion of not being able to write a single final exam this past winter semester, which Queen¿¿s student health and the Department of Economics I have worked out a timeline and a plan in which I will be working to fix during the summer. I have supporting documents from both Queen¿¿s Student health and the specialist from KGH, supporting my claim. Since the end of Exam and mid-June I have been visiting various doctors and working on various treatment options. This incident has lead me to experiment with various medications which have put me in a state not able to complete what is needed for an appeal. Since a week ago being on a plan and on medication that is helping me to get back on my feet and begin to restart my life and build on a new lifestyle I have not been able to write an academic appeal for dropping several courses from winter semester. Because of my circumstances I have contacted specific professors past the deadline for marks to be submitted. I have been placed on academic probation because I wasn¿¿t able to submit an appeal on time (due to an exam I was not able to write resulting in an F in the course).
My hopes working towards overcoming this downfall is to focus on getting better, by attending my treatment plans and working with specialists. I do not want this one incident controlling the rest of my life. I¿¿m willing to work hard and put in the effort to not only change my lifestyle but have a better outcome academically.
My future plan is a little short term mainly focusing on what I¿¿m planning on accomplishing this summer, and that is to complete the program I am currently in through the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault program at KGH. I plan on following my treatment plan rigorously and I with the help of the Economics department and my professors I have come up with a plan to write my final exams for my core courses after my treatment plan therefore I can move on to some third year core courses, so I¿¿m not too behind. In the mean time I am using this summer to spend some time on extra course, which I¿¿m taking online and currently able to complete. In the long term, I¿¿m looking forward to slowly build myself to become able to handle the regular course work, in the beginning of the fall semester I¿¿m going to take 3 or 4 courses and then work my way to see how I¿¿m feeling. I will be continuing to see my doctor regularly and I will continue to be taking the right medication needed in order to get my life back and to be able to succeed academically during my short time at Queen¿¿s.
