Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean of Faculty of Arts and Science, I am appealing to request to take 3rd or 4th year courses away on a letter of permission.
I am unable to take 3rd year courses in Queen's University because my family is currently going through a difficult time financially. They did not want me to come to Canada for my post-secondary education, as they knew it was going to cost significantly more than Korea. However, they were willing to send me here due to my strong passion for studying abroad. They requested me to get a part-time job since it would be difficult for them to give me allowance throughout the whole year. Despite struggling financially, it was possible for me to study abroad, as I worked a part-time job and got a General Bursary from the University. Unfortunately, in the beginning of last year, my family had to struggle with a tremendous amount of expenses following the death of my beloved Grandmother. Firstly, my Grandmother was misdiagnosed, causing her recovery time to be longer, followed by more expenses for her medicine. Secondly, my Grandmother was the one who took care of my Quadriplegic Aunt and my Paraplegic Grandfather. Now, my father has to pay for the individual that takes care of my Aunt with some support from the Government. Insurance does not cover nursing home expenses; therefore, we have to pay for my Grandfather's entire medical costs. Hence, due to my family's tight financial situation, I would either have to take year off or go to Korea University for my 3rd year. Studying for a year at Korea University will be more efficient towards my future plan at Queen's University than postponing it with a year off. My coursework in Korea University will complement my graduation plan and prevent me from encountering setbacks in the future.
Apart from the financial problem, it would be the only time that I can spend my time with my family and especially with my ill grandfather. I am an international student and live alone in Canada, away from my family. I had a really hard time when I got a call from my mom that my grandmother passed away. Dealing with sadness and emptiness alone without my family was terribly depressing. I am truly sorry if this problem is too personal but I do not want to go through the same situation alone. I want to spend more time with my grandfather when it is possible.
I strongly trust that studying for a year at Korea University will be more efficient towards my future plan at Queen's University than postponing it with a year off. By studying for one year in Korea, I will be able to make the best use of my time and work towards my degree so that I may soon find a career and provide for my family.
