Petition Letter
To the Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing the Faculty's decision that I must withdraw from Queen's for one year.
Throughout the school year I became overwhelmed by the academic adjustment from high school to university. Unfortunately, my grades suffered because of this. I did not develop my time management or organization skills. This resulted in poor work and lack of preparation for tests and exams. During my first semester I became very sick when multiple essays and assignments were due for a number of my courses. Due to the overwhelming stress and my sickness I neglected to notify people of my situation and did not ask for help, resulting in me failing to complete major assignments. I negatively reacted to this stress because I did not know how to handle it. In turn, this stress had caused me to put off my responsibilities, creating a pattern that was difficult to break. As well, receiving negative feedback from some of my work also made me feel disheartened, further worsening my work ethic.
In addition, I found that I was not motivated by my political science course, which I had originally intended to major in. When the academic year ended I enrolled in summer courses to bring my GPA up, in hopes of returning to school in the Fall. Throughout the summer I worked on my time management and developed a much better work ethic. I had taken three courses this past summer term which helped boost my GPA to above the minimum requirements for withdrawal. In addition to taking three summer courses I also worked a part time job to help finance my education; it is for this reason that there is room for improvement on the grades I earned during the summer months.
Due to my increased GPA I hope to have my academic standing reconsidered. If given the opportunity, I would return back to school more motivated than I have ever been. It is my dream to graduate from Queen's University and I am willing to put in as much hard work necessary to achieve this goal.
