Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,
Hello Associate Dean. My name is Adam Simcoe. I am requesting an appeal to drop courses HIST 289 and HIST 242. My circumstances for requesting this appeal are that my father unexpectedly passed away before the start of the school year. In late July my father was brought to the emergency where he later passed away due to an intestinal failure that the medical staff were unable to detect until it was too late. I have been grief struck ever since I started school in September. I originally took steps to combat this by dropping a course for a lighter course load as well seeking counseling help both at home in Gravenhurst as well as here at Queen¿¿s. I have been put on a number of medications in order to combat my depression and anxiety, but after months of battling it combined with the added stress of schoolwork, I have concluded (with medical support) that I am simply unable to function at an academic level during this time. As such, I wish to take a leave of absence from University for the remainder of the year where I can seek both more intensive psychiatric therapy as well as spend time with my family since my hometown is over 4 hours away. My future plan if this appeal is accepted is to return to school in the fall 2018 term, and continue counseling until I have no more need for medication to stay mentally healthy. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and if you require any more information please let me know.
Sincerely,
Adam Simcoe
