Petition Letter
I am writing to appeal to have an extension on three INs from fall 2015 (one which was entered at the end of the period as a C and the other two that switched over to Fs) in DRAM 216, DRAM 344, and DRAM 348 due to extenuating health circumstances.
I am diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, and am registered through Accessibility Services. Due to worsening symptoms, I was hospitalized for a little over two weeks in the fall term, then home to Brighton for about a week to recover. After being discharged then coming back to Kingston after a stay in Brighton, I was unable to return to all my classes for the remainder of the term. Because of this, my professors gave me incompletes and allowed to finish the course work at a later date once I was in better health.
The following term my courses were unable to be completed due to surgery. I was not in school that term as I had a total colectomy and ileostomy creation on March 2, and required extensive recovery and adjustment time post-op. I was also unfortunately in no state to complete course work pre-op due to my combined mental and physical state. My weight had dropped to around 80 pounds and I could hardly eat or move without being in pain. Post-op involved a lengthy recovery period, and weaning off of various medications (that included side effects of brain fog).
I was optimistic that I could complete the course work over the summer. Unfortunately, unforeseen barriers arose. These included extreme anxiety and fatigue linked to my recovery and remaining colitis symptoms. I did meet with a psychiatrist, Dr. Michael J. Monaghan, throughout the summer to help try and manage the anxiety. I was able to complete the work for DRAM 344 during the summer months, as I was able to comprehend the material at hand. However, I was unable to complete DRAM 216 and DRAM 348 at that time due to the academic nature of the assignments, but I was able to complete the work over this past term after gradually getting back to a proper mental state.
All three courses in question have now been fully completed, graded, and my professors have submitted my change of grades and they should be on my file. My professors are in support of these grade changes, as they were made fully aware of the situation and understand why extra time was needed. I do hope that this appeal will be granted, and more information can be provided above and beyond what has been submitted if need be.
