Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean of Life Sciences and Biochemistry,
I am appealing to drop CHEM 281 (Fall, 2016) and ANAT 215 ( Fall, 2016) after the academic deadline due to several extenuating circumstances during the fall term from October to November 2016.
The situation started when I was feeling atypically ill in mid October last year. Physical symptoms on top of the anxiety and depression of being ill made me unable to attend lectures and labs since I could barely get out of bed. I booked several appointments with the downtown walk in clinic as well as the student wellness service, however the doctors were not helpful in eliminating the symptoms. Through out the following 3 weeks, I requested several extensions on assignments as well as postponing midterms in all five of my courses. I managed to finish PHGY 214 midterm and PSYC 235 assignment, however the result did not reflect the best of my studies. On November 13, I was admitted in Kingston General Hospital through the emergency department. I slipped into a coma after attending a meeting at school on Sunday around 9pm for unknown reason several hours. I stayed in the psychiatric department for 4 days, was given medications and was discharged on the afternoon of November 17.
Afterwards I spent the remaining months in Toronto for recovery and was sent to several doctor's appointments for followups.
Unfortunately I did not have the chance to complete my course evaluations, including midterm 2 of CHEM281, tests of ANAT 215, and the exams of PSYC235, PSYC271, CHEM281, ANAT215, and PHGY214.
After returning to school and discussing with my professors in January, I've decided to complete the remaining work of PSYC 235 and PSYC 271 during the winter term, while appealing to drop the 2 fall term courses since I do not think I can perform well enough in all my studies after the long recovery.
I am currently seeking support from school counsellors and psychiatrist to help me get through the rest of winter term.
I plan on retaking courses I am appealing to drop next year so I can continue to complete my degree plan.
I am also taking summer courses in both 2017 and 2018 so I can have a lighter course load during fall/winter term in the future.
Thank you for your considerations.
