To the Associate Dean (Studies),
Please accept this appeal to add PSYC 570 Special Directed Lab to my timetable following the add/drop deadline.
I am appealing this primarily because of the timing in setting up this course with Dr. Jordan Poppenk, who will be acting as my supervisor and instructor should this appeal be granted. The application and interview process to join Dr. Poppenk's lab as a Directed Undergraduate student began past the first day of classes in the Winter 2017 term. Following this, beginning the directed lab involved drafting an acceptable agreement between myself and Dr. Poppenk in order to determine how I should be evaluated for my contribution to the lab. As Dr. Poppenk also took on two other directed lab students, this process took longer than expected and an agreement was not decided on until past the add/drop deadline.
Taking on a directed lab involved making several quick decisions regarding my academic schedule and personal schedule. This included dropping PSYC 251 (Developmental Psychology) in order to free up space on my timetable, adjust professional commitments such as meetings in my Residence Don career to ensure that I would have time to work as a directed lab student, and redefining the path I wish to take within my psychology career from clinical research to cognitive neuroscience. To me, this has been a great deal of turnaround to compensate for a course I have been certain will be added to my schedule since the end of the first week of classes.
To compensate for the late addition, I have written an academic plan to be found with this appeal. In short, I have already been working with Dr. Poppenk and his lab since the outset of week 2, and intend to assist in other areas of lab work to make up for time that may have been lost in earlier to weeks. This will ensure that the work I put in is consistent with academic standards at Queen's University. This is discussed in more detail through my academic plan.
