Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean:
I am appealing to drop the grades from my official transcript for the following courses: CHEM 112 and PHYS 117. I would also like to appeal for a CR for the following courses: MATH 121, BIOL 102 (fall), and BIOL 103 (winter).
I came to Queen¿¿s University to try to reinvent myself as I have been suffering with major depressive disorder for a few years now. I was clinical diagnosed in 2012, but I have been with it since grade 8. I decided to choose Queen¿¿s because their mental health awareness was far more superior compared to the other universities I applied to. Before coming to Queen¿¿s I took an extra year off, and during that gap year, I was enrolled for half a semester and later on work at an Orthodontic office. When I came to Queen¿¿s I was very happy and I was doing well at the start of the school year but later on, it started to go downhill. I did not have a psychiatrist in Kingston at the time because I would go home during the holidays to see my psychiatrist, but it was not enough. I started to develop symptoms and signs of severe depression during November and had an extremely hard time sleeping during my time at Queen¿¿s. My sleep affected my performance to work, stay awake, and focus during lectures and labs; I had 3 to 5 hours of sleep each day because I have sleep apnea and insomnia; however, there where days where I couldn¿¿t sleep for 24 hours or more. In addition, I had a noisy neighbour who had a very load sex life; she would also have friends over past 1 am consistently throughout the school year, and I have talked to my don about it but her behaviour did not stop. The depression dramatically affected me physically, emotionally and impaired my academic performance because I began to question my existence and if what I was doing was worth it. It affected my motivation, mood, and interactions with others around me. With sleep deprivation and depression, I was unable to work at my full potential, as it has crimpled me at times where I would not move out of my bed.
If this appeal is approved, my plans are to retake the a few courses. I have been doing well in my summer courses and I have registered myself with the resources that Queen¿¿s provides. I have registered with disability services and have a psychiatrist in Kingston now, Dr. McNevin. I have also been seeing an academic advisor to discuss my upcoming year; I will be taking a lighter course load when I come back in the fall. I plan to continue my use of the campus resources and get aid from Dr. McNevin. Dr. McNevin and I have been seeing each other every week since I am living in Kingston for the summer; he has been teaching me skills on how to cope with my depression and helping me with my sleep deprivation. My future goal is to graduate Queen¿¿s University with a BSCH degree in biochemistry and pursue my dream of becoming an Orthodontist. I believe staying in Kingston for the summer has allowed me to get the resources I need to succeed for my upcoming year and the future at Queen¿¿s. I am an extremely hard worker, but I have been working this summer to study smart and not study hard with the campus resources. I do believe that Queen¿¿s University will help me achieve my future endeavours and that this school will help me through my depression.
Sincerely,
Sunny Lee
