Petition Letter
To whom it may concern,
I am writing to appeal the one year off withdrawal from Queen's University. I was not surprised, but very upset to received the phone call from the academic adviser this week which informed me of my dismissal. I would like to urge you to reinstate me for next semester without one year off.
I have to admit that i had very difficult time last semester, and my grades suffered as a result. I do not mean to make excuses for my poor academic performance, but i would like to explain the circumstances. As a first year International student, after i know the low GPA i already select three more lesson in this summer term. For the first year study, major is the most important problem in my mind, my father wants me to choose Economic as the major and my mother prefer Psychology, both of them are not familiar for me so i choose Econ110 and Psych100. Than the first problem come out, Math121 as a supporting lesson was out of seat, than i went to the dunning hall and asking for help, i hearted that bi0-math 121 is similar with Math121, than the office in dunning hall help me to enroll the Bio-math 121, although bio-math's class time all just 10 minutes after the Econ110. But i made a mistake for choosing elective course, i choose music102, Cogs100, Gelo106 and Geography, i hearted from higher graduated student from Psychology that cognative science is good for student who want to major in psychology and it is not difficult. So i enrolled Cogs100 in the second week of the first term, the past two week's class is not that easy as i thought and i did s0 so in the first month, i thought i could handle the workload, i still think i could have, except that i was suddenly told by my parents that they have been divorced for a long time, they thought i have been grow up and i need to know this. While i was at home, my grandmother always asking me about their problem, and at this time she start to connect with me through phone call and blame me about my parents problem. During the class time in Queen's University in the whole 2016, every monday's thursday and wednesday i need to take the taxi from Econ110 class to west-campus for Bio-Math121 lesson. In the fall term, i did bad in math midterm but perfect in the weekly quiz and homework, as well as the in-class clicker. Also i will have to call back to my grandmother's home and comfort her cause she is alone. I know that the family problem influenced me a lot, than i ask myself to focus more on the school work in the 2017 winter term, but at this moment i was sick for several time, i still remember the noon in the midterm A for geography i was laying on the bed due to deficiency of the kidney and cannot move for 6 hours. Needless to say, some of the course are one year lesson, if i did bad in the first half year the coming half year will not be good either.
Even when I was at school, I was very distracted with the home situation and was unable to focus on my schoolwork. I thought I could handle all of these burdens, and I tried my best, but I was wrong, unfortunately, my grandmother was very sick during the spring time, and she cried with me about nobody looking after her, then i talked a lot with my mother cause they have a tense relationship. I call back at home everyday night and weekend. I still tried to pay more attention on study. I know that GPA in the 2016fall and 2017 winter cannot change, so i choose three lessons in 2017 summer term, my friends all around me and encourage me, i promise to myself that i will have better grade in this summer.
When i got the message from the adviser that i was required withdrawal with one year off i thought i can not take the one year off, because as a student whose mother language is not english i need more time of an environment in english, also in this summer i will figure out the problem in my family and myself. I already make appointment for the hospital and have a check of myself. One year off can not help me to prove the GPA in the following year, but make me continue to study in Queen's will help me quickly fit into this different culture and language study system.
I really love Queen's University, if I am able to continue study without one year off, I will focus much better on my schoolwork, take fewer hours, and manage my time more wisely. Fortunately, my friends all encourage me a lot, so I should not need to fell so sad about my family.
Please understand that my low GPA that led to my dismissal does not indicate that I am a bad student. Really, I'm a good student who had one very, very bad semester. I hope you will give me a second chance. Thank you for considering this appeal.
Sincerely,
Di Hu
