Academic Plan
Timing
In 2017, first semester classes at University of Sydney began March 6th, and exam period went from June 19th to July 1rst. The dates for 2018 are not currently available but I assume they will be very similar.
For this reason, I will not be able to take courses at Queen¿¿s during the winter semester of 2018. I will also not be missing any of my fall 2017 or fall 2018 semester course dates.
Mandatory 3rd year Courses
At the time of the study abroad program, I will be in my third year of my BioMedical Computer Science degree. During that winter/ second semester, there are 2 mandatory courses that are part of my degree plan, CISC 322 and BIOL 331. This is how I am planning to handle them:
CISC 322 - Professor Dingel and I have already agreed on a course at the University of Sydney that Queen¿¿s will transfer as an equivalent credit.
BIOL 331 - Since I didn¿¿t find any equivalent courses for this Queen¿¿s biology course, I have decided not to apply to have it transferred. It is not a prerequisite to any of my fourth year courses and I do have space in the winter semester of fourth year to complete the required BIOL 331 at Queen¿¿s.
Elective Credits
The University of Sydney offers students 4 courses per semester on study abroad. I plan on transferring my mandatory course, CISC 322, as well as 3 other courses that will count towards my elective credits at Queen¿¿s. Again, professor Dingel and I have agreed on a couple courses that Queen¿¿s would recognize as unspecified CISC courses.
Graduation requirements
Taking those 4 courses will put me behind by one course (3 credits) to complete my 120 credit degree.
Also, due to the heavy second year course load in my degree plan I have not yet taken STATS 263, a mandatory course. I plan on taking it either, this coming fall (2017) or during the summer semester of 2018 online. It is a course that is available every semester online and in class, giving me the flexibility to take it when I have time. I am aware that it is a course I need to take in addition to the full course loads I have planned for every following semester at Queen¿¿s.
Faculty Support
Professor Dingel and I had a chain of emails when discussing my course options and plan. I have attached the two most important emails. In the first, he outlines which courses Queen¿¿s would most likely accept. That email is the basis of the course selection that I will be submitting with my letter of permission to get credit transfer approval. The second email contains his statement of support of my general participation in the international study abroad program.
Finally, from the conversations that I have had with the international programs office and various staff members at the School of Computing, I¿¿m very confident that this will be a positive experience and will in no way negatively impact my plan to graduate at Queen¿¿s university by the spring of 2019.
