Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard, Associate Dean (Studies),
I am appealing for Late Drop of STAT 263, ANAT 215 and PHGY214A. I am also appealing for Credit Standing for GEOL 107 of the Fall semester of 2016.
Beginning in the Fall of 2016, my best friend, who is diagnosed with BPD, was hospitalized for multiple suicide attempts throughout the semester. After these events it was extremely difficult for me to focus on my class work and I began to fall behind. The stress and anxiety that these event caused me made it even more difficult to attend my classes. The illness that my best friend was challenged reminded me of many past traumatic experiences from my childhood and issues that I have repressed in my personal mental health. This lead to the spiralling down fall of my chronic depression. As I began falling even more behind in my course load this added a lot more anxiety. I was too afraid to search for help and this lead to the failing of my courses (STAT 263 and ANAT 215). I was able to pass GEOL 107 because the information taught in the course came very easy to me and, to my personal advantage, did not require as much time and studying. Upon second semester I tried to start fresh, however my depression was too much to handle, leading to my hospitalization for an suicide attempt on February 9th.
The steps that I took in dealing with the extenuating circumstances did not occur until second semester after my hospitalization. My first step was seeking an academic advisor (Dr. Spring Forsberg) and dropping my second semester course load to prevent repeating my first semester mistakes. I then registered with Queen¿¿s Mental Health and began therapy. I attended an equine therapy treatment program in Prince Edward County on my own time and reached out to my family doctor in Kingsville, Ontario. I received a doctor¿¿s note for my academic appeal in March. It has taken me from March to June to finally sit down and write my appeal, as these events have been extremely triggering for me. I tried multiple times which lead to self destructive outburst and self harm. Writing my appeal before the April 30th deadline was extremely affecting the progress that I was undergoing in my therapy sessions.
I will no longer have to re-take STAT 263,ANAT 215 and PHGY214, as I have successfully transferred into the Environmental Science Major program, which is a better suit for my career choice. For the 2017-2018 academic school year, I am planning on taking a lighter course load. I am already registered to continue therapy with Queen¿¿s Health upon my return in September, as well as my friend who was hospitalized last Fall. I am going to continue speaking with my academic advisor, Spring Forsberg, throughout the school year as well. And lastly, after the summer is over I will be seeking for a family doctor in Kingston that will assess my mental health throughout the year. I am confident that these plans will assist in achieving academic success.
I hope that my appeal waives the appeal deadline and is deemed successful.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Brianna Jackson
