Petition Letter
from my program for an year but I would like to appeal this and have that request waived. The courses involved are GNDS 125, HLTH 101 (The one I took during Fall of 2016, not the one I'm enrolled in for Summer of 2017), HLTH 102, and PSYC 100 A/B. After speaking to someone in academic advising I was told I could request to have the grades I received in the courses seen as credits rather than have the grades show up on my transcript.
The reason why I did so poorly this academic year is that I have been going through an abundant amount of family related issues prior to coming (which is why I was very excited to leave), that took a serious toll on my mental health, targeting at school, and negative coping strategies. I am a transfer student, but have always wanted to go to Queens since the ninth grade. I just applied too late the previous year and was pressured by family to stay home. But come semester one at my old university I knew that I had made the wrong decision. My life at home was very dark, I would be going through constant emotional abuse and pressure to be a certain person that I was not. My family has always been angered that I was not the type of daughter they'd like me to be, and the pressure was becoming too much and living almost a double life was becoming difficult. My mother had intentionally sabotaged and placed obstacles in front of any opportunity I'd receive, as well as doing her best to keep me reliant on her so that she could continue to control me. This is why I worked and paid for all of my applications, transfer of credits, residence deposits myself, and applied for OSAP. Her constant desire to control was apparent to even my friends' families, which is why a lot of them would get involved and help me because my mother was not someone I could see as having my best interests at heart. My father is an emotionally distant person and does not like to get involved in our lives so he was never there for me either. Therefore without the support of my friends I wouldn't have been able to leave. I was almost completely alone, and in constant tears that summer. It was so bad that my friends were going to rent a car and help me move in when until a couple days before I was to leave my mother decided to do it. Come September, I was hopeful and happy about my year but then the stress of school fees came in and because my mother intentionally delayed and sabotaged my OSAP application the money was coming in late and I was not going to be receiving enough to cover my costs. So I had to ask my parents for help because my only other option was a line of credit which would require a co-signer meaning my parents. Then while those issues were being sorted my mother was calling me everyday mad about one thing after the other and cancelling my phone when I didn't answer (because I was in class, the library or the cafeteria). But to add on and make things worse I was also being targeted at school for my religion and race, making me feel even more alone. It was so bad I went to seek aid from my residence don who got me in touch with other residence officials about the incident. But rather than helping me they had me come in multiple times and repeat the story to a different person from a different rank. I began to understand why victims decide not to press charges on assailants, because it feels like your bruise is being poked at again and again. I felt so rejected and different, and somehow everyone on my floor knew about it and the residence officials seemed as though they were protecting themselves rather than actually helping me. This is when my negative coping strategies began that made school even moredifficult. I was just so numb and I was just done with feeling so down constantly and different from my peers. The timeline of these events that I just spoke about began in September. Then after seeing my grades from Fall of 2016 I planned to change my habits and get better, and I actually did start studying more and getting on top of my studies. But then again came another hit where I was again targeted by another person on my floor. This time after seeing the way the last incident was handled I thought it was pointless to even bother. This floor mate was also friends with a lot of people on my floor and the incident began after I privately asked him to stop insulting my race, religion and making jokes in group settings about both those things. The day I decided enough was enough was when he was making fun of starving children in Africa in my room. After asking him to stop in private somehow the entire floor knew and again I was isolated and being different was again very apparent. Everyone somehow sided with him because he was a very liked person by my floor, I told him that I just want him to stop using the n word, stop making jokes about airport security, and not to make comments like how he forgets that I was born here. At this point I didn't even want to be on my floor anymore and would stay over at my friend's place and go to class from there. I went back to my negative coping methods, which again took a toll my academics. I tried talking to my mom about it but she wasn't any help and used these incidents as reason for me to come back home. And before I even knew it the year was ending and I had very little timeframe to salvage my grades.
