Petition Letter
I wish to appeal for Credit Standing for PSYC100 and BIOL 103 from the winter term of 2017, with a proposal of my MATH121 final being weighted as a larger portion of my overall grade (course taken during Summer 2017 term, final exam currently deferred to September 19th). I unfortunately had a trying year, and do not wish these grades to be a statistical representation of what I am capable of as a student.
To whom this letter may concern, my full consent is given for access to my medical records through the Queen¿¿s Student Health Centre.
I started the school year with unforeseen mental health issues and numerous visits to the Queens student health centre. My consistent doctor throughout the year was GP Dr. Borrins, who proceeded to re-diagnose me (as I¿¿ve been diagnosed with/overcome these illnesses in the past) with GAD and social anxiety. I underwent many counselling and psychiatric visits as well as a plethora of different medications, and in result experienced much trial and error in the span of both semesters. My mental health, on top of many family issues I was experiencing, consistently distracted me from my studies the majority of the time, and I failed to see the importance of my academics during those times because of how engulfed I was in the mental well being of my family and myself. I was even on the fence on wanting to even continue with my academic career.
My mother was unfortunately admitted to a rehabilitation centre through the duration of second semester. It was unfortunate timing as these were already trying times for myself, and second semester failed to improve academically as I continued therapy and new medications with minimal results. I wasn¿¿t allowed to contact my mother unless she contacted me which resulted in minimal contact throughout those months, which I know had a negative effect on my well being. I now understand her lack of contact at that time was part of her personal rehabilitation process, and I feel as though my family, and myself, are improving and growing stronger everyday. I¿¿m unsure as to how I can present any documentation surrounding that as I am unsure whether she would be comfortable about it, but nonetheless she was admitted at the Edgewood Treatment Centre, at 2121 Boxwood Rd, from February the 24th till April the 22nd. Please inquire if further documentation is required, I will try my best.
My mental health improved exponentially this summer, and I decided to retake MATH112. Unfortunately this summer didn¿¿t go without disruption for me. An assault took place at the beginning of July that essentially turned the rest of the month into disarray. Attached are the contacts of the VPD officers that worked with me, as well as a photo of the case number and date written by PC Danna Budde. July consisted of hospital visits, prophylaxis treatments with unfortunate side effects, and police interviews at the VPD station. I unfortunately had to postpone my Math exam as a Family Trauma claim till this coming September as these events deemed me unprepared to take on academics. I am glad to say I am now completely safe and okay, and I am learning to speak out about these events. There is still an ongoing investigation surrounding the case which will continue through this coming semester. There is a new detective on the case that specializes in sexual assault, Eve Coning, and if there are any further inquiries about this case I can bring them to her.
I am upset with my current grade in Math as I missed much of the coursework in July. I am already studying for the final and was hoping for it to be weighted as a higher portion of my final grade
I was only made aware of the appeal regulations following this July in emailing Alan Ableson regarding MATH 121 DIST, and I realize it was my responsibility to initially take action regarding my winter term courses. I fully understand if it would be too late to appeal Winter Term courses as it¿¿s currently the end of August, but I though I would at least explain my situation.
