Petition Letter
My name is Rachel Wolfe and I¿¿m in the faculty of Arts, studying Psychology.
I thought it would be a good idea to take numerous science courses because I planned to switch to BsC psychology during second year. Unfortunately, I¿¿ve realized that this isn't the path for me, and my marks are reflecting that. I¿¿m struggling in Biology, and extra help hasn¿¿t made much of a difference. In addition, health issues have made it much harder to manage my workload. I have Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) or Sympathetic Reflex Dystrophy (RSD) in my left shoulder and arm, and have been affected by it for over 3 years. It causes, severe, shooting pain down my left arm and osteoporosis in my left radius and ulna, as well as swelling, discolouration, and loss of feeling in certain areas. With the addition of the constant pain, it has been much harder to focus on my subjects, and I truly believe that my marks have suffered severely because of it. In order to manage my condition, I travel to Toronto to get Lidocaine infusions every 2 weeks- 1 month. Unfortunately, the mix of the stress from school and the workload has made it practically impossible to do so, and I missed my treatment dates. I¿¿m sorry to be applying after the drop date, but I took the last few days to take a breathe and re-evaluate my academic path, as I was extremely overwhelmed, and at a loss for what to do next. I have already dropped Chemistry and Philosophy, and plan to make up the credits I¿¿m losing, during the summer. Before I made this appeal, I made sure to re-read the requirements for BAH psych. In doing so, I learned that dropping this course wouldnt decrease, or stall my chances of completing my program. I¿¿ve taken into account that Bio 102 and Bio 103 are single term courses, so I won't get a refund, but in my eyes, passing the subjects and enjoying what I¿¿m studying is far more important than losing money. Finally, I am unsure if I want to continue to study at Queen¿¿s next year, and finishing my first year is extremely important to me. I would really appreciate it if you would take my appeal into consideration, and understand my extenuating circumstances.
