Petition Letter
To Whom It May Concern,
I'm writing in regards to appealing the one term deadline. During my first semester here at Queens, I unexpectedly lost my brother, and as a result, my studies suffered greatly. Although I reached out to my professors for extensions during the first few weeks when I was dealing with the immediate shock, a few weeks was simply not enough time for me to be stable enough to focus properly on my studies.
In the months after the event and of my first semester, I developed severe depression, which soon after lead to a severe anxiety disorder. When my grades continued dropping and I ended up on academic probation, I tried over the counter medications to supress a lot of what was going through my mind while I tried to pull my grades back up. When over the counter medications failed, I resulted to prescription medications in May 2017 after being required to withdraw for one year.
After seeking professional medical help over the last 6 months, I am finally in a stable enough place to revisit my studies. I'm appealing the one term deadline now because I wasn't in an emotional state then to return, but now that I've sought out advice from both doctors, as well as academic advisors, I feel much more prepared to launch into my journey with Queens again.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Kate Thomas
