Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,
I am appealing to request an aegrotat standing for my PHYS P20 course, for circumstances associated with a recent surgery. On November 21st I underwent a rather intensive foot surgery, which prevented me from walking. This surgery has affected my ability to complete schoolwork due to pain, medication side effects, my inability to concentrate, and my inability to walk.
I have been on the wait list for this surgery for approximately four years; the length of my undergrad. It was only due to completing my degree through distance studies that I was able to be available in Vancouver if a surgery time was provided. Two weeks prior to my surgery date I received a call from the Foot and Ankle Clinic at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver with a surgery time. I immediately contacted my instructors at Queen's University and took a medical leave from my part time job.
For the full-year course I am taking, MATH 121, I have worked with both my professor Alan Ableson and the CDS team to reschedule my midterm exam. Professor Ableson was kind enough to waive some assignments due to my state and collaborated with me to work out an appropriate, yet much delayed schedule for completing some necessary tests for the course.
For my PHYS P20 course, I was able to complete 60 percent of the course work prior to surgery, leaving only the 40 percent exam to complete. It was suggested to me by both the CDS team and the Academic Appeals Office that an aegrotat standing would be a good option for me.
Over the next few months, I will be working closely with my surgeon, supporting doctors, physiotherapist, counsellor and family members as I focus on my recovery. The unfortunate reality with a physical injury is the mental impact it has as well. Having suffered from mental illness over the past few years of my life, it is imperative that I keep my life as stress free as possible, especially while recovering from a physical trauma. I live with severe anxiety and have recovered from an eating disorder, both of which affected my undergraduate studies at Queen's. I hope that with a strong support system, I can stay on track with my recovery and will able to continue my full term math course with vigour. After completing my bachelor's degree at Queen's University I am hopeful to continue my education in a masters program in Vancouver.
I greatly appreciate your time and consideration. Thank you in advance for your sensitivity towards my case.
Sincerely,
Caroline Saunders
