Petition Letter
Dear Dean,
I am writing to express my deepest hope that you will read this and understand that I have changed. I have changed my attitude, I have changed my work ethic and I have changed my commitment to my own future.
In understanding how I changed and my sincere desire to do better, I hope you will grant my appeal to re-attend Queens in order that I may complete my Bachelor of Arts degree and move forward in my career and life.
For your background information, I was asked by your office, at the end of the 2013 academic year to leave Queens for a 3 year period due to my failure to pass a geography course necessary to complete my degree as well as the inability to maintain my GPA above 1.60. This was the 2nd time I was asked to leave the University; the first was after my second year in 2011. Both were for poor academic performance. I simply didn't care enough at the time to work for my grades. But I very much care now.
I did not fully comprehend the second suspension at the time. I was in shock and I was ashamed of myself and did not tell my parents. I knew the disappointment this would bring them and my embarrassment at the suspension, complemented by my indecisiveness at the time resulted in missing the critical window to register an appeal (21 days). That was a serious error on my part for which I understand and take full responsibility. Sadly I require less than two credits to graduate from Queens and I am faced with a three year suspension.
For the last year I have been working at different jobs and I have had my eyes opened to the reality of not having a University degree. I am now making this a priority and after speaking with my advisor Spring Forsberg, I was told the first step in getting back to completing these courses is to appeal my decision not to appeal within the 21 day window that is given for these appeals. As stated, I take full responsibility for missing these deadlines and my poor performance during my time at Queens.
Looking ahead I would like to complete my degree as quickly as possible and move on to more meaningful work and create a new life for myself. I am 24 years old and realize completing my degree is critical to further development. I understand that this appeal is the first in many possible appeals in gaining re-admission to Queens but I am committed to doing whatever is necessary and speaking to whomever can help me return to complete what I started in 2008.
If my appeal was granted and I was able to return to Queen's before the three year suspension was up, I would register in the two units that I need to complete my BA. I would also re-register for two or more courses that I had already completed and either received failing grades or less than average grades and by doing so would be able to bring up my GPA to the accepted level of 1.6 needed to graduate from the University.
