I am appealing to receive Credit Standing for the course ANAT 309 which I completed in the Fall 2017 semester. I am appealing due to extenuating circumstances in that I was informed that my grandfather had passed away on December 1st by my mother on the 2nd, a few days prior to my final lab exam, scheduled to take place on December 5th in that class. This event shook me to my core, as I was unequipped and inexperienced in dealing with a loss of that scale. This has been the first loss of a close family member I have experienced, and with it occurring so close to the date of my lab exam I chose to try and ignore that it had happened, and suppress my emotions to focus on my studies. I believe this negatively affected my performance as my studying was of low quality due to my mind drifting often to my grandfather and the emotions surrounding his passing. I also began sleeping less at night and feeling exhausted during the day. In the days leading up to the final I had greater difficulties than normal memorizing and recalling information as well as with concentration. I believe that the effects of this event ultimately played a role in my performance in the lab exam, where I received 40. After writing the examination I took some time for myself and talked about what had happened with a close friend and how I was doing. This, along with trying to go to sleep earlier for the next few days really helped clear my head in time for my next examination, which occurred on the 9th.
Going forward I now know that these emotions cannot just be pushed aside and must instead be processed as they arise. Should something of this nature occur to me again I will be seeking out peer support where I know I can talk through my feelings in a safe space, and I will not be trying to suppress my emotions as I believe this harmed me. I will try to arrange in advance for a deadline extension so that I may have the time I need to grieve should something of this nature occur in the future.
Thank you for your time in reviewing my appeal,
Ella Olivia Hansen
