Appeal to Waive One-Term Deadline
To The Associate Dean (Studies),
I am submitting this appeal to waive the one-term deadline on dropping a course. I took ENGL217 in the winter semester of 2017 and am wanting to appeal to get it dropped. The extenuating circumstances that caused me to not be able to file this appeal until now are an eating disorder, limited knowledge about the appeal process, and a very stressful living situation.
My eating disorder has impacted me severely and was very active at the time of this course and afterwards. I have anorexia and it comes with many troubling side effects that greatly impacted my ability to attend to academic matters during this time period. Some of the mental side effects of anorexia that I suffered were difficulty focusing, thinking, prioritizing, and switching tasks. As the eating disorder is accompanied by very disordered thinking, I was unable to attend to this matter during my suffering and subsequent treatment that occurred throughout the summer prior to fall semester of 2017.
Upon returning to school in September, I was still getting treated for my eating disorder and I saw the counsellor at Queen¿¿s a couple of times to discuss this. While dealing with this, my house had a very terrible rodent infestation. This caused myself and my housemates to be unable to cook in our kitchen, which led to me not being able to eat and further aggravated my eating disorder, which I was trying to recover from. I was also unable to sleep due to hearing the rodents running through our walls and the traps snapping as they were caught.
I was unaware that appealing to get a course dropped was an option. I did not learn that this was an option for me until January of 2018. I found out through my housemate who told me she had done this process before to get failures dropped from her transcript. Upon learning that this was an option for me, I immediately looked into it and found out I was way past the deadline. That is when I began drafting this appeal letter.
I have completed treatment for my eating disorder and am no longer showing symptoms. I have also moved to a different home as of January 2018 that is free of any rodent issues. With these major changes, I am confident that I will be able to continue to reach my academic goals going forward.
