Petition Letter
Dear Associate Deans (Studies),
I am appealing the finding of departure from academic integrity and the sanction imposed as a result of the instructor¿¿s finding. I am appealing the finding and the sanction as I believe they are much too severe and that I do not deserve such a penalty for my actions.
On November 15th 2017, I attended the 3:30pm Spanish class instead of my later Spanish class that took place at 7pm. Myself and another student signed the attendance sheet for our later class, because the earlier class sheet did not have our names listed on it. It is stated by Rebeca Munoz in the finding that 'I helped myself to a document' that was not being circulated in the class but this statement is false. Another student took the sheet, I simply signed it.
Rebeca also states that I did not want an in-person meeting to discus the misunderstanding, but this is untrue. I went to see Rebeca after class to discuss and she told me I had to email her.
The reason I left the class in the first place was because I received a call from my mom about the state of my grandmother, which upset me a lot. I asked my friend to leave class with me for support.
In addition, the evidence Rebeca uses, particularly Document 1, Item 1, shows that we signed into class at 15:30, but does not show what time we were in class, and I believe that this could not be concluded as a misrepresentation of class attendance. Moreover, Document 1, Item 2, has an incorrect time stamp, but clearly shows that I did not falsify any record as my name is not signed onto that sheet.
The entire process was very unsupportive, I had no help for creating a case, and I was never provided a meeting with Rebeca to discuss the situation. Also, I was told 2 days after writing the exam that I was found responsible for misrepresenting the class attendance.
I don¿¿t believe I deserve a failing grade and a level II sanction for what occurred. There is no process for signing out of class, therefore I was unsure of what to do, as I needed to leave class and my instructor was not in class.
