Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean,
My name is Warren Steele and I am currently enrolled at Queen¿¿s University taking one course per semester. I am appealing the deadline for course admission and I would like the opportunity to enroll in two additional courses this semester.
The reason for my late application for these additional courses is due to my unexpected release from the Kingston Frontenacs Hockey team this past week (please see the attached media story). During my previous two years on the team, I have been committed to my academics as a part-time student. My time in the OHL has come to an abrupt halt on Tuesday, September 23rd and I knew immediately that it was time to re-consider my future and make my main priority my future academics career. I look forward to taking on this new challenge.
The OHL is a semi-professional league, and playing hockey was a job for me resulting in my academic pursuits being put on hold while I pursued my dream of playing professional hockey. Being relieved from my duty as a hockey player I have decided to pursue my, just as ambitious, dream of becoming a lawyer here at Queen¿¿s University. Unfortunately due to the rigorous and demanding hockey schedule that the OHL presents (68 regular season games per year and significant travel), I was only able to manage one university course. I realize that the timing of my departure from the Frontenac¿¿s isn¿¿t ideal as the course deadline was almost a week ago, therefore I was not able to enrol into a full-time course load at Queen¿¿s. My organizational and time-management skills allowed me to pursue my career as a hockey player and to achieve a 2.2 GPA in my courses taken thus far. I believe that with the ability to focus more time on academic studies that I can increase my course load and achieve a higher GPA.
I have come to realize that at this point in time I need to focus my time on my academics at Queen¿¿s University and on my future. Unlike others in first year, I will enter University as a 20-year old with a clear sense of purpose as to my professional career and I wish to commit myself fully to my dream of graduating from Queen¿¿s and pursuing a law degree.
In order to attend Queen¿¿s full-time, it is mandatory to pick up two more courses to continue my progression to full-time studies. This unexpected change to my career as a student, and hockey player was definitely an emotional and stressful time. However, upon reflection I am excited and fully committed to this new academic path and I am hopeful that the Appeal Panel will look favourable upon my appeal.
I am fully aware that my application is late and that I have missed several weeks of course material in each class. I am confident in my ability to catch-up and am fully prepared to dedicate the additional time and effort required to ensure that I meet, and exceed, the necessary course requirements.
I have personally been in contact with my Professors and have discussed the readings and assignments that I have missed to date. They are being extremely helpful in ensuring that I make up for the weeks missed successfully and I have already requested the readings and assignments.
Further, I have in contact with the course professors and TA¿¿s and have received information with regard to the course readings and assignments. As a Kingston resident,for the past four years, I have been fortunate to be provided the privilege of surrounding myself with a excellent support network. I currently live off campus with my Aunt and Uncle here in Kingston and will continue to do so as I attend Queen¿¿s. This provides the advantage of additional family support and the necessary environment that will allow me to focus on my academics and my main priority of becoming a lawyer.
Although hockey is no longer my professional aspiration, it remains a significant element in my life and is important to my physical health and well-being, I will utilize the support of the Athletic Department's Academic Support Program and Tutoring/Mentoring program to assist me in my academic pursuits.
I am prepared and look forward to begin this new chapter in my life at Queen¿¿s University with your positive consideration of my appeal.
