Appeal to the Associate Dean of Studies: Burke 06333847
Introduction:
My name is Rochelle Burke and I am a third year student at Queen¿¿s University. I am a Gender Studies major and a Political Studies minor. During the 2012-2013 academic year I started to experience financial difficulty. I was evicted from my place of residence in February 2013 and as such I struggled to complete the required course work for the term, which culminated in subpar marks as well as a few failures.
Third Year: September 2012-April 2013
I left Kingston in March of 2013 and I started working in order to try to better my financial situation, I also made accommodations with my professors in order to complete final exams. I am writing this appeal for GNDS 215, which is a required course for my GNDS major. I had good grades on the major writing assignments going into the final paper however with the fact that I had just gotten evicted my mindset was not in the place where I was able to write a culminating paper for a course. During the summer of 2013 I spoke to my instructor Dr. Houghtaling and she was very accommodating, however with financial constraints and familial issues I was in no shape to finish the course work. I had a death in my family (aunt) shortly after the end of the 2012-2013 academic year, as well as at that time my debt load was approximately 40 0000 (excluding OSAP).
Due to those stressful constraints I decided to take the 2013-2014 academic year off in order to pay off some of my debts. I was successful in paying off some debts, and as such I have returned to studies this academic year. During my time off I kept in contact with my instructor Dr. Houghtaling and informed her of what was going on in my personal life as to why I was unable to submit the course work, she was very helpful. I was also speaking with an academic advisor Ms. Haley Everson (Faculty of Arts and Science) who kept me very focused, and gave me excellent academic advice during my time off.
I have met with a counselor in Disability Services (Dr. Vetere) who had been seeing me during my 2012-2013 academic year, I have gone to see him this year in order to be proactive and manage my financial and personal stress. I would like to respectfully ask that I am permitted to waive the 21-day deadline for appeals, and that I may submit the final course work for GNDS 215 (final paper, tutorial summaries) by the end of the 2014-2015 academic year (August 2015) to Dr. Houghtaling for assessment.
