Petition Letter
To The Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts and Science,
I am appealing to you for Agrotat status in PHYS 100.
Since September 2017 I have experienced frequent panic attacks, often with no warning. In addition, I have suffered from bouts of insomnia and I have experienced many days where I was unable to physically attend classes. In late November 2017, I was clinically diagnosed with Anxiety and Depression. Since then I continue to be treated by a medical doctor and a licensed therapist. I am currently taking medication to control my anxiety and depression. Prior to the first term exam, I was achieving approximately a B+. Despite feeling well prepared, the night before the exam I suffered from insomnia and as a result experienced anxiety during the exam. My grade for the exam was about a 45. The three months following the exam have been particularly stressful as I continue to adjust to my medication. I have needed to return home four times since Christmas because of my severe anxiety and depression. I have also been unable to attend a few of my labs during this past semester. Due to the unpredictable nature of my anxiety attacks, I am extremely concerned about my performance on the final exam.
I am committed to successfully completing the course. To date I do not have any outstanding assignments and I have been pushing myself to make it to the lectures and labs. I continue to consult with my Accessibility Advisor Micheal Beganyi about my options for completing this year. Due to my illness I have needed to drop a course but will be taking it online this spring and I am also investigating another online option for the fall to reduce some stress by adding some flexibility to my schedule. I will continue to meet with my family doctor once I am back at home in pursuit of finding the correct dose and medication for me and will be looking into counselling options in my town. By seeking out further medical attention my goal is to be able to come back next year as a second-year student and with more control over my illnesses. I understand that while I may not be able to make myself 100 better my hope is that I will at least be able to minimize my symptoms or prevent them from getting further out of control. I hope to hear back from you soon and appreciate your time.
Thank you,
Samantha Farah
