Petition Letter
Severe depression.
My mom works as a waitress minimum wage and my dad makes roughly 400 a month which puts us in a low-income family (and have been as far as I can remember). My dad tried for years to find a new job, but to no avail. Last year, he went to Haiti to serve as a missionary. He decided that he would make it a permanent choice as of September last year. The only thoughts that were coming to my mind was that he was running away from his obligations and leaving his problems behind.
Since I worked at IBM as a technical writer intern, I was able to pay off most of the bills but our financial situation is unsustainable. The pressure fell on me to find a job to provide support for the family. I applied to many jobs but to just a bunch of rejections and failed attempts. I started losing hope and stopped going to class and attended only when I had to. The start of this year, my grandma was diagnosed with cancer, to which I was feeling more pressure of the nagging impression of finding a job. This was on top of my brother telling me that he was struggling himself in his PHD for Chemistry and he was stressed as well if he could actually have a paper published.
Late May, I started an interview process with SunLife and reached the second round of interviews in April. I studied hard cause I didn't expect to go this far. My last presentation day for this course was a day before my interview in Toronto with SunLife. I chose to stay in Toronto and send in a video instead. I got rejected from SunLife a few days later and by no response, I assume that my video was also rejected, since it was required of me to come to class. On the days coming where my report was due, I did nothing. I stayed in bed for a week. I couldn't do anything. I couldn't keep fighting the nagging thought that I would amount to nothing, and that I had to show for that when I get home. I know and did know that at some point I had to pick up from where I left off and be in charge of my responsibilities. At the moment, I didn't care. I realized the dangers of failing and i chose to lose 35 of my marks for free. This weekend, I took the time to do the report, but ONLY spending the weekend to not overwork the time that I would otherwise have had before the due date. I am still stressing out, but there is only so many days before it's too late.
So, I humbly ask that I get the work graded with penalty, otherwise having to be in danger of failing. If not, I ask that I be allowed to drop the course without penalty. I will come in person to show all claims in evidence through my emails, phone messages, and pictures. I do not wish to share this with my family as this is a delicate area.
Sincere thanks for your consideration,
Joshua Lee
