Petition Letter
April 27th, 2018
Dear Associate Dean (studies),
My name is Zoe Wall, student number 10187660, and I am appealing to drop the following courses: MATH 221, STAT 268, and MATH 110 (Fall, 2017).
This year, my preexisting anxiety disorder worsened to an uncontrollable state, which directly influenced my academic performance. I¿¿ve struggled with anxiety disorder my entire life, but it had always been manageable. In the 2016-2017 school year, my anxiety became quite bad and it hindered my academic success. I tried extremely hard to get the help that I knew I needed over the winter semester, as well as throughout the summer. I was under the impression that I was set up for success when I returned to school for the 2017-2018 year. I quickly realized that I had been extremely wrong. My anxiety was uncontrollable and I soon became extremely depressed. I became quite isolated, as well as I found it impossible to leave the house, especially for class. The medication that I was taking altered my sleep schedule drastically, therefor I was sleeping all of the time. As a result, I lost my ability to focus, thus affecting my preparation for tests and exams, as well as my completion of assignments. It became impossible for me to do anything. It is extremely frustrating because I love school, as well as learning, but my anxiety prevents me from preforming to the best of my abilities. I have found that once I am finally able to focus and study, I understand a majority of the material, but it is often too late as I have usually missed key lessons presented in class or I have not given myself enough time to learn all of the material for the upcoming test, exams, etc.
Ultimately, I made the difficult decision to take the winter semester off and move back home. In my time off, I got a job and developed a routine. I found an amazing doctor who helped me find a medication that was right for me. I have been attending a counselor twice a week. This summer, I will continue to develop effective coping mechanisms for stress and anxiety with my counselor. In order to succeed in my future studies, I will continue to meet with a personal counselor once a week throughout the entirety of the school year. I will continue my daily routine that will help encourage me to attend class and manage my time properly in order to complete my school work. I have now realized that taking time off of school to focus on bettering myself was the ONLY solution to my problem. This time off has been the best decision of my life, as I have finally gotten my anxiety under control. I can now confidently say that I am more than ready to return to school and work hard towards the grades I know that I can achieve.
Sincerely,
Zoe Wall
