Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Atkinson,
I am appealing to have my PHGY 214, fall and winter terms of 2017, 2018, grade be counted as a late drop rather then a fail.
My performance in this class was affected by extenuating circumstances that I did not have control over. In January 2018 my grandfather had an accident that resulted in him being unconscious in the hospital. After a couple of days in the hospital and with no possibility of recovery, my grandfather was put on palliative care and passed away the following day on January 31, 2018. My grandfather lived in Nova Scotia and thus I was not able to be there during this time. This caused a significant amount of personal stress and distraction since I was not able to be there with him and to say good bye. This was also the first death that I have personally experienced and thus took a lot for me to handle. On February 8, 2018, I had to travel to Nova Scotia to attend my grandfather¿¿s visitation on February 10, 2018. This meant that I would have to miss multiple classes on PHGY 214 and would not be able to work on it while I was away. Not only did the time away from class effect my performance in the course, the death of my grandfather also made it difficult to focus on this class and complete the work to an appropriate standard. This resulted in me falling behind and not being able to catch up. In the time that this was happening I believed that I was going to be able to catch up and recover academically, however, when the end of the semester came this was not the case. During the time this was occurring I was able to personally recover by having the support of my family and friends, but it effected my academic performance since I missed classes and fell behind in my work load.
My plan for the future is that I am enrolled in spring/summer 2018 semester course equivalent of PHGY 215, and PHGY 216.
Sincerely,
Emma Lane
