Dear Dean,
I writing to request two appeals, namely
To drop Math 126 entirely from my transcript: and
to request a credit standing on Pols 110.
Explanation
In general a combination of newly diagnosed ADD, the medication and my use of appropriate tactics to deal with it, and my residence living conditions combined to make my results in these two classes not indicative of my abilities. Some specifics of these matters follow.
I was diagnosed with ADD shortly before I commenced Queens University in September, 2017. Just before classes started I was prescribed medication for this condition and submitted material doctors materials to Accessibility Services requesting certain concessions. I took the initial medication through the fall semester but it resulted in some unwanted side effects including a loss of weight and appetite. As a result I consulted with my doctor and changed medications around January, 2018. While the new medication did not adversely affect my appetite it also did not work on my ADD as well as the first medication. My attention span was adversely affected, as well as my overall mental health. Unfortunately the results can clearly be seen in the large mark drop in both Pols 110 and Math 126 between the fall and spring semesters.
There we a couple of other factors that also adversely affected me. In particular, the materials provided to the Accessibility Services recommended especially Math 126 that i receive not just extra time ( which i did receive ) but also be permitted memory assists. When contacted at Camp by Accessibility Services i neglected to ask for the memory aid assistance. This was my mistake but it hurt my ability to perform. Similar to this concession, my new living accomodations ( away from home and sharing a room) was new to me and i did not do as well as i should have in adjusting to these circumstances and seeking more help when it was needed.
All of these issues only effected Math 126 and Pols 110 more than Econ as I had taken AP Economics in high school. This meant that i was more familiar with the majority of the material while the content of Math 126 and Pols 110 was new content to me. After the drug change I started to slip and was not my best self. While the previous drug had a negative impact physically, I am learning how to better work around those and will definitely be better come next year.
Future Plan
Since i¿¿ve now experienced my first year at Queen¿¿s i will be able to approach next year in a more structured manner. First, I now have more experience with the effects of the medication used to assist me. My first time taking medication was in my first year and it took time for me to recognize effects and differences. I to contact with my doctor regularly, to make sure that the medication is effect and that adverse effects are minimized. Also, I plan to take full advantage of all the resources offered by Queen¿¿s such as the learning center, office hours and advisors to help me succeed. In particular I also plan to meet with Accessibility Services to ensure that i request and receive all the concessions available to me. Also, this past school year I had lived in a small double room. Next year I will have my own room. One of my issues relating to ADD is focus and a quieter single room will make me less likely to be distracted or become agitated. All of these combined will make next year a successful academic year for me.
