Dear Dr. Atkinson,
My name is Mackenzie Haughton I am a current Queen¿¿s history student about to enter third year in the fall, I am requesting to complete the first semester of my third year at the University of Guelph in the Fall of 2018. My reason for attending Guelph for a semester are largely financial. I live within a 45 minute drive of the University of Guelph and would be able to make the commute to Guelph while living at home. Living at home would save me the cost of rent, utilities, internet, food and other expenses that life in Kingston requires. I also have a job at home so I can be earning money while saving money.
Living at home would save me roughly 1000 per month, money I would normally be spending on living expenses in Kingston. Being able to save thousands in the semester while still earning money throughout the fall will allow me to obtain the extra cash I need in order to cover the extra costs associated with an independent international exchange that I plan to go on in the winter semester of third year (January 2019). Attending a local university, working and living at home is the only way exchange is a feasible option for me financially. Exchange has always been a dream of mine and when I couldn¿¿t secure a spot in the Queen¿¿s exchange program I knew I had to find another way to go out and see the world and this is the only option for third year that gives me the funds I need to follow this plan.
I have researched the requirements for obtaining my degree at Queen¿¿s and am planning on taking courses at Guelph that allow my to stay on track with my original degree plan and graduate on time. I have spoken with the Undergraduate Chair of the History Department who has approved my third year plans. I plan on taking two seminar courses at Guelph as well as one or two second year lecture courses to satisfy my degree requirements. This would still be considered a full course load. I have been in touch with the Exchange and Transfer Credit Advisor in the History Department to ensure the courses I take at Guelph will transfer back to Queen¿¿s (this will be confirmed by the processing of my Letter of Permission (LOP) which is processed after my appeal is accepted). I am also trying to take no more than two seminars 4th year when I return to Queen¿¿s as per the recommendation of Dr. Walker (History Undergraduate Chair).
I am currently still working out the details of my winter exchange and applying to various programs ensuring they have courses that will count towards my degree, this will be an ongoing process over the summer as the deadline for most winter term exchanges is not until October. Looking past third year I plan to return to Queen¿¿s 4th year and have a regular year taking courses to finish up my degree and graduate with my class in the Spring of 2020.
