Petition Letter
Hello Dr. Benard,
My name is Emma Mumford and I am going into my fourth year in the BNSc program at Queen's. I would like to appeal for an extension of an incomplete grade for my course ASTR 101 which I am taking this summer. Due to a number of factors which have occurred this summer, I have not been able to give my best effort towards this course, which has resulted in some missed deadlines and an overall lower grade than I would have been able to achieve. The course's final exam is on August the 2nd and I intended to write the exam. I am concerned about making up for the marks I have lost earlier on in the term, and believe if I am given an extension or extra work to complete I can make up for it.
Over the spring term I experienced the loss of two family members. My Grandfather passed away on Valentines Day of this year, and my Grandmother followed shortly on April 24th 2018. I have never experienced the death of a family member, and found this to be very challenging. The circumstances began then, but they have continued to affect my family as a whole. My mother, who I consider to be one of my closest friends, lost both of her parents in a very short period of time. Helping her work through this grief and loss was one of my focuses when coming home from University in May. I am from Mississauga and was not able to support my mother during the initial period of time after their deaths, but upon returning home I have tried to be a pillar of support for her. I also took on a full time job for the first time this summer. I know everyone works and it is necessary to be able to find a balance in life. I did however find my job to be a big adjustment. I started working as a Clinical Extern at Credit Valley Hospital this summer. I work up to 54 hours a week, 12 hour shifts, which can be during the day or night. Additionally this is also the first summer I had decided to take on a summer course. At school other individuals in study constantly surround me, but I found it very difficult to manage my workload, course load, and family matters at the same time. The combination of all these factors caused me to fall behind on my course throughout May and June. It then became a cycle of anxiety where the more I realized I was falling behind, the more stressed and paralyzed with anxiety I became. I am putting in all efforts now to try to do as much course before the end of term as possible. I was very excited to take this class, and despite Astronomy not being my chosen field I have been interested in the study of space since childhood. I wanted to use this course as a learning opportunity to expand my knowledge past the world of Nursing, and I feel I was not able to give my best efforts.
My mother is in a much better place spiritually now than from the start of the summer, and I know that I am better acclimatized now to managing my workload and coarse load. I would like an opportunity to make up for some of the work I missed.
Thank you for your consideration,
Emma Mumford
