Petition Letter
To the Associate Dean of Studies:
I am requesting an appeal to drop a course after the academic deadline. (STAT 263) Throughout the winter 2018 year and through the summer I struggled with my mental health. I was having a very hard time due to personal family issues that left me with depression although I was unable to reach out for help during the winter term. It was very difficult to motivate myself to study and engage myself in this course especially due to math being a very difficult subject for me. I felt physically and mentally drained throughout the winter term and could not find the energy to motivate myself. I could not even find the energy to motivate myself to do anything, even the things and hobbies I love such as drawing. Although I applied for academic consideration to push my STAT 263 exam from the end of April to this September, my mental health has really stood in the way for me to do well and push myself in this course. Throughout the winter and summer of this year I found it extremely hard to fully participate and motivate myself which led me to fall behind in the course. In addition, I believe a big part in why I was so unmotivated was because I decided I was studying a major that I did not want to be studying anymore. (Thus, I am changing my major to something I love now and this STAT 263 course is unnecessary for my new major) In the summer I realized I needed some medical help and went to a doctor and a personal counselor who helped me by diagnosing me, talking to me and prescribing some medicine to help. It was very difficult for me in the summer because I had to try multiple different medications in order to find one that worked for me and allowed me to be able to balance being awake, functional and most importantly happier. It took a while (essentially the whole summer) before I could find the perfect balance of medication that allowed me to be functional and happy. However, I spent the summer trying to focus on my mental health and getting better rather than studying for my exam. I apologize as I should have reached out and spoke to someone about my mental health sooner but it was hard for me to realize and reach out for the help I really needed. I am optimistic and I believe that I am in a much better shape to be able to finally motivate myself in doing well in my classes again.
Thank you so much for your consideration,
Jenny
