Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean of Studies:
I am appealing to waive the 21-day deadline.
I was unable to file my appeal within the 21-day deadline because of circumstances beyond my control that continued to impact me until the submission of this letter. First, I was diagnosed with a psychological disorder in the fall of 2017 until the present time. Residual symptoms are still present. My ability to focus on my studies was adversely impacted since the late fall of 2017 because I struggled to remain focused, to take initiative and to stay on task. My memory was also negatively affected as I experienced great difficulty with the recall of dates and information. Given these difficulties, I sincerely did not recall the 21 day deadline, nor was I in a stable enough mental state at the time to commence the process of contesting the grade. It was difficult getting myself out of bed in the morning the days that I could, and thinking about anything anxiety-provoking, or stressful without panicking. Secondly, I was further adversely impacted from December 2017 to the present time by the illness of my younger brother which only further aggravated my condition, particularly upon my visits to the family home and my stay there this summer. I have experienced a most challenging period characterized by adversity, anxiety and depression. I hope I have expressed how challenging it has been without disclosing too intimate and personal details.
I have taken gradual steps to help me progressively deal with the ongoing difficulties presented by the above two situations. First, I have consulted regularly with my doctor. Second, I have also maintained regular contact with a secondary health care professional, a very experienced psychologist. Third, I have undergone an assessment with another experienced psychologist and have completed most recently a series of sessions in biofeedback and neurofeedback aimed at improving the symptoms of my condition.
My plan is to maintain contact with my doctor and my psychologist. I also plan to continue with the neurofeedback and biofeedback sessions when I return to Toronto for monthly visits. It is my intention to continue to avail myself of the above supports and resources so that I may have a stronger and successful academic school year.
I am most appreciative of your time and attention in considering my appeal to waive the 21-day deadline.
Sincerely,
Rachael Tontodonati
