Petition Letter
I am asking to drop two courses, HLTH 237 and SPAN 204 from the fall term of 2018. I have been unable to attend these classes frequently. I was able to attend HLTH 237 twice, and SPAN 204 about six times in total. The extenuating circumstances I have been experiencing began around week 3 of this term. This is around the time that I made my first counselling appointment and doctor's appointment. During my appointment at the doctor's I was prescribed medication because of severe mental health issues I was dealing with on a daily basis. This unfortunately did not help, and I kept returning for follow-up appointments every 2 to 4 weeks. Throughout this time my mental health continued to decline, to a point of not being able to attend school, work, or extra-curricular activities. This also meant I was unable to do readings or assignments. At this point I worked with a crisis counsellor to get started on Academic Accommodations. I was granted considerations which allowed me to receive extensions on assignments and not have my attendance impact my grade. Within the next two weeks, I was in the emergency room as things continued to decline. After this I went to Rina in Counselling Services to see what other options there were for me. This is when we submitted the paperwork to allow me to take a leave from school for 4 to 8 weeks, this was on October 22.
As a result of the circumstances listed above I was unable to gain much from either class I am requesting to drop. HLTH 237 is on Monday evenings from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. This made it difficult for me to attend as I have patterns of mental health problems being exacerbated in the evening. SPAN 204 was a particularly difficult class for me to attend because of a number of aspects, including small class size, and mandatory class participation. After speaking to an occupational therapist, Tess Grant, and a member of student services, Haley Everson, I was advised by both of them to drop the courses.
