Petition Letter
Dear Arts and science faculty,
I'm a full-degree international student who studies in the first-year arts and science faculty. I'm appealing to drop the fall term class CISC101 which is a 3.0 credit basic computer science class. I did not drop this class before Oct.31th because we did not have a midterm of this course before the deadline of dropping class, which means we cannot use the midterm mark to evaluate whether we could pass this course or not. Thus, I have no idea whether I can pass or not before 0ctober 31st. We just had our midterm on November 14th, after we received our mark, I noticed more than half of the class failed the exam. November 17th, which is the day that we knew our mark, it is the first time that we could actually evaluate ourselves. Then I know that I will not have a chance to pass this course. Moreover, I study the lecture note for 1 hour everyday. On the day before the midterm, I even reviewed until 4 o'clock. Nevertheless, I still failed. If I had this midterm before October.31th, I will definitely drop this course and I will not wait until this point.
We have lab every Friday and I raised my hand to ask TA questions or ask friends around me once I have a problem. With TA and friends' help, I could get 4 out of 5. However, if I did it alone, I could only get three out of five. On the SOLUS webpage of CISC 101, the course introduction says this course intended for students who have no programming experience. However, most of the students who passed the midterm all have different extents programing experience.
Based on the aforementioned situations and reasons, it seem to be a better resolution for me to drop this course and focus on the other manageable courses in order to have a better academic performance. I appreciate your consideration and help. Thank you so much.
Yours sincerely,
Yifan Diao
