Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean,
I am a first-year student that is appealing to drop CISC 110 (Fall, 2018). This course was my elective, and I took it because I was very interested in coding, and I thought it would be very useful since technology keeps advancing. I had no experience in coding prior to taking the course, and I thought it would be a useful course to take on. I did well on all of my assignments, went to every class, and did pretty well on the midterm. Going into the exam I did not expect to get the outcome that I achieved. I did not know that if you failed the exam, you would fail the whole course.
I took this course as my elective, however I ended up getting the worst result I could imagine due to unforeseen circumstances. I have never failed a course in my life until now. The result of my computer science exam was shocking, and unanticipated. If I had known that the outcome of my exam would be the reason you pass or failed the course, I would not have written the exam and asked for a reschedule date because I was sick during the time I wrote the exam. On the Queens website, it stated that the final exam was worth 45 of the final mark.
Four out of my five exams were scheduled within one week giving me 48 hours to prepare, (I did well on all four exams) the only one that I actually had plenty of time to prepare for was computer science, which was one week later. After I completed all four exams, I planned on going home and returning for my final exam (1 week later) which happened to be computer science with plenty of time to prepare...so I thought. Unfortunately, once I settled back at home, feeling relaxed and comfy, I started to feel sick. I was coughing, sneezing, and my head felt like a tonne of bricks fell on it. I was doomed, I had no energy to study or prepare. The chills started and diarrhea followed. Thank God I was home, and my wonderful parents nursed me during this time. I did not seek medical help during this time even though I was not well. However, when I got back to school, I wasn't 100 percent in good health. I was very weak and exhausted, and I should have tried to reschedule the exam, unfortunately I didn't and was very disappointed with the outcome.
Therefore, I would like to drop this course due to the uncontrolled circumstance of my sickness, which affected my performance on this exam. This failure taught me that I need to know my limits. In the future, I plan on taking this course or one similar to it to receive a grade to my standards. Believe me my academic goals are set high.
