Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences,
I am requesting to drop the following courses: CISC 124 (2 attempts; Fall 2018, Winter 2019), CISC 282 (Fall 2018), ARTF 275 (Fall 2018), CISC 203 (Winter 2019), and MATH 210 (Winter 2019).
Due to a personal traumatic event that occurred in March 2018, I began experiencing some mental health issues that affected my academic performance for the past year.
Some of my symptoms include:
- fear of seeing other students on campus
- lack of concentration; difficulty writing and retaining information.
- My ADHD (which was diagnosed in secondary school)is more severe.
- fear of crowds on campus.
- Not able to leave my apartment for multiple days in a row.
- social isolation
- the loss of joy in participating in clubs and events I had previously been part of. Such as, Vice president of Queen's Student Diversity Project, President of Jam for Justice, & inter-murals.
The above symptoms have affected my ability to attend classes, meet with my tutor, study, pass my exams, participate in student life, and schedule and attend meetings with professors and administration.
I am trying my best to address my mental health needs by:
- seeking help from Queen's Counseling in October 2018; however, they were not able to see me until December 2018 and January 2019.
- I sought out a private clinical counselor in February 2019 and continue to see this counselor weekly.
- I have finally submitted my documentation RARC (student accommodation for my ADHD).
- I have spoken with Academic Advising (March 27, 2019) regarding my academic future at Queen's.
My plan for the future is to take the summer to continue counseling and register to re-due the courses I require in September 2019. I plan on meeting with an academic advisor to plan my course selection.
