Petition Letter
Hello,
My name is Piero Rocca, I just finished my second year at Queen¿¿s and I wish to appeal for credit standing. In the fall term, I struggled with family issues that impacted my work habits and studying. This started around late October ¿¿ late December, and while things are better now it definitely had an impact on my grades. I was not as focused as I should have been and I found it difficult to go to class near the latter part of the semester and even just to clear my head and study for exams. I was not sure what to do about it, or that Queen¿¿s even offered an appeals process so I accepted the poor grade. Near the end of the winter term, I found my GPA struggling and I am finding it hard to get into the PPE program or apply for the Law certificate which I believe will help with my studies beyond undergrad. A friend referred me to talk to Tess Grant and explain my situation and she would be better able to outline my options and what I could do about it. I explained to her that I passed Econ 212 with a D- and that it was affecting my GPA tremendously. She referred me to speak with Spring and they both told me I should request and appeal for Credit Standing on the grade given my circumstances. I was not aware of this process or even of a deadline to submit the appeal until I spoke to Tess and Spring, so that is why it is coming in so late. While it also affected my Politics marks, it did not have that big of an impact, I think because I¿¿ve always enjoyed reading (and that is mainly how I would study for politics). It had the greatest effect on my Math 126 and Econ 212 grades, however, with math being a full year course, I was able to better my test scores throughout the year. Likewise, with my Politics 250 (full year course), there was an incline in better marks in the winter term compared to the fall marks. I am aware that other options include taking Econ 212 in the summer or again during the semester, however, as I explained to Tess and Spring ¿¿ if I wish to switch into the PPE program, my course load would have to focus a lot more on Philosophy courses, as I will have satisfied the majority of the Politics and Economics components, but will need to get started on the Philosophy classes which I saved for last (reading being one of my strong points). As for the summer option, I wish to enroll in the certificate in law offered by Queen¿¿s, so apart from working a full time job this summer I am also taking Law 201 and Law 205 in order to qualify for the certificate. I often got a call from my parents regarding the family issue at hand, and wanting to stay out of it as much as I can, every phone call affected my ability to remain focused during the December exam period. I have never seen a therapist nor did I think this was a matter for a doctor¿¿s appointment, as this sort of thing happens within families and it is just a matter of accepting it. Spring advised me to get one of my relatives to write a letter as a supporting document. Thank you for your consideration.
