Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean (studies),
I am appealing to drop ENIN 140 (Winter, 2019). I was recommended by the instructor and an academic advisor to complete this appeal since unfortunately throughout the winter semester I was unable to complete the course requirements due to extenuating circumstances as described below.
I was unable to complete course requirements for and subsequently pass ENIN 140 due to acute physical and mental illness. This impairment began in early February and was officially documented for February 11th. My condition was most severe at the beginning of its onset, but it proceeded to decrease in severity with time once I begun seeking care from both a physician from student wellness services and a residence outreach counsellor. I am currently still experiencing this impairment however with continued treatment my condition continues to improve, and I am hopeful for recovery before the new semester.
During the semester this condition considerably impacted my academic performance. In the week of Monday February 11th, I missed all my classes and almost all of my academic requirements such as assignments and midterms. Moving forward throughout the semester I had decreased ability to complete assignments and attend tests on schedule and I had to arrange alternative dates with my professors for all of my courses. In addition, I had difficulty attending class and being fully present when I attended class. It was around March 7th when I began the process to acquire a short-term academic consideration longer than 48 hours to 3 months, and I verified my personal health condition with a residence outreach counsellor. Around this time, I also received treatment from a physician from student wellness services.
I was unable to pass ENIN 140 since in the week of Monday February 11th, I was unable to hand in our first course assignment which would be an automatic fail for the course due to course policy. My condition and subsequent decreased academic competency considerably impacted all of my courses, however I am only appealing ENIN 140 since missing the assignment resulted in a fail for the course despite my efforts to receive accommodations and an additional extension. My other courses did not have an automatic fail policy and I was able to reschedule my other requirements.
I was unable to drop the course by the week 8 deadline as this period overlapped with my period of more serious impairment. I had not sought out any help at this time and I was unable to fulfill my requirements at the time.
My future plan for achieving academic success consist of three main parts. Should my appeal be granted I plan to retake the course in the following academic year over the fall session. This will support my academic goals as it will make up for my lost credit and allow me to gain all the requirements for my plan. Secondly, I plan to make personal adjustments that include maintaining regular meetings with my residence outreach counsellor and continue care with a physician as necessary. This will support my academic gaols as it will ensure that I remain in a state of full academic functioning. Finally, I plan to keep an open line of communication with my professors so they are appropriately aware of issues I may be experiencing that are impacting my academics so we can come to an early agreement and so they can advise me accordingly. This will support my academic goals as it will help me to complete course requirements according to the schedule and will allow my professors notice in advance if there are any accommodations that I may need.
