Student Name: Aolin Zhou
Dear Academic Committee,
I am Aolin Zhou, a sophomore student majoring in Geography at Queens University. For the past year, Queens University has given me an amazing experience, the lovely campus was peaceful and elegant, and the instructors and advisors were so patient and helpful to me. But the wonderful environment did not make me become the student I dreamed to be. I did not give in my best work and effort and got way too distracted by what happened to my family. I felt that I am losing the greatest opportunity to obtain knowledge because of my mistakes. Again, I am grateful to Academic Committee for giving me another chance to be a responsible student.
When I first entered Queens in fall 2017, I encountered problems that most new college students would face. Though our instructors have given enough guidance, I did not prepare well enough for the transition from high school to university. Not adjusting well enough to the increased self-study hours and reading load, and decreased communication between me and other students and instructors, not realizing the difficulty of courses, I met problems on study, and did not promptly seek support for the courses.
When spring came, and I have spent half a year at Queens, things seemed to start going in the right direction. I adjusted my study strategy and made efforts on my study. However, my grandpa was diagnosed as cerebral infraction sequela. It struck me hard. My grandpa has always been the most significant source of guide and support for me, and I could never imagine him being seriously ill and suffer. I called my family in China to check his situation and diagnosis frequently, despite the time difference. I kept worrying about him and could not stop myself to assume the worst. I could not fall asleep at night, struggling between continuing my semester at Queens and going back to China to be by my grandpa's side. Eventually, my mental status was impacted due to the excessive worry, lack of sleep, and disruption of biological clock, I started to become deeply frustrated and disappointed of myself and I could not even find someone to talk about this feeling since all my close friends were in my home country.
Due to the bad status, I even made a mistake on Summer 2018. I once registered for two courses in this semester and hope to raise my GPA. But since my family spent much money on grandpa's recovery, they could not afford me to study one extra session. I can only spend my whole summer in Kingston and thus got very depressed. I thought the summer session was not registered successfully due to lack of tuition submission. During the whole summer, I did not check email inbox and cut contact with classmates, and friends. After the summer session, I found out school still registered me as a summer-session student. And due to lack of attendance, I got F for all the summer session courses, which made me more desperate. I hope you can understand my struggles and that I was not able to devote myself entirely to studying. I know how upset my family felt when they knew the notification from school, but they still encouraged me not to give up my last chance, and told me it is never too late to start giving my best effort.
Looking back at the past semesters, it has been a grinding and lifelong lesson for me. I realize that I have not given in my best to studies, and my passions have faded at a point because of all my negative emotions, but all the painful moments are not unfortunate. I view those as most valuable lessons of life that I have learned. They helped me to grow, and to understand whats precious in life, that I must value them as they cannot be retrieved once they are lost, to realize that I need to put in my best effort to bring meaning and purpose in my life, to believe that I can still fulfill my dreams, and this desire is even stronger than ever. I do not want to lose my chance to further my education at Queens due to my ignorance and recklessness. I will put in my best effort, and I am confident in achieving success in my following years of study.
I hereby express the most profound gratitude to Queens, my professors, and my advisors, for giving me a chance to recognize my mistakes in the past year and giving me support whenever I need it. I chose to enroll at Queens because I love this university. Its delightful scenes in the springtime, every buildings and sculptures, the helpful and friendly instructors, the friends that I studied and played sports with, I love all of them. My attachment to Queens grew even stronger as time goes by, and I am disheartened and anguished at the thought of leaving. I sincerely wish I can be allowed another chance to further my education and to prove myself at Queens, and I promise that I will not let all of you down.
For this appeal, I submit my appeal letter, family diagnosis document (original and translation). Two Weeks ago, I also send the translation copy to the notary office for authentication. But it needs an extra couple of days to get the certificated translation copy. So, I submit the unofficial translation copy first and will send the certificated version as soon as I get it.
Thank you for your time and consideration of my appeal.
