Academic Plan
Academic Plan - Ronik Jagpal
Through consultation with professionals, family and self-reflection I have been able to assess and identify why I struggled this past academic year. I believe that following the Academic Plan described below will allow me to realistically monitor my progress so that I can achieve my academic goals next semester.
Course of Study
One of the first things I have done is assess the plan that I was pursuing and realized that it was not best suited to my strengths and interests. Consequently, I submitted an application to change into an Economics Degree Plan. This application was approved and the courses I intend to register in will fall within this program. For the first semester, I would like to register in ECON 212, ECON 241 and Math 121. I would be re-taking Math 121. After consulting with advisors, this may change based on the guidance I receive. Courses selected for the following semesters will also be dependant on advice as well as my area of interest and strengths - although the focus will remain on Economics.
Full Time versus Part Time Status
I am now aware that attending as a full time student this past year was contributory to my results. I would like to lighten my course load and register for three courses per semester. This is part of my strategy for success because I can then focus more on less.
Strategies for Success
In grade school, I was diagnosed with Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) and my teachers supported me in using a variety of strategies to manage. Because I did well in elementary and high school, I did not think that this disorder affected me much in any way. When I got to university, things became difficult and the few strategies I had did not seem to be enough. I also realize that I downplayed the affect this disorder had on my learning. My concentration was greatly affected and the pace sometimes got overwhelming. School became very challenging which lead to stress and anxiety. This made keeping up even more problematic. I now know that I need to get outside help to learn more strategies that will help me with both my CAPD and anxiety caused by it. My doctor has provided me with information that has helped me make a list of strategies I can use to manage my condition. I have made or will make appointments with a counsellor, peer support, and an academic advisor. I will also get help from a tutor when needed. Lastly, I plan to visit the Regional Assessment and Resource Centre to discuss whether retesting is necessary and an option. A full list of resources that I have marshaled in support of my proposed return to studies will be uploaded in supporting documents. I have also composed a chart of strategies that will help guide me and allow me to check my progress. This outline is provided below:
