Petition Letter
To Dr. Stephenson,
My name is Catherine Gavaris and I am going into my fourth year of my undergraduate degree this September. I am writing this letter to appeal to drop MUSC 171 Summer 2019. I am appealing to drop this course because of extenuating circumstance beyond my control. I have been suffering from severe anxiety since the end of June. This severe episode lasted into August and caused me to be unable to complete my course work. It got to the point where I was having consistent anxiety attacks and was barely sleeping, making me physically and mentally exhausted. As I had enrolled in MUSC 171 earlier in the summer, I was already in midst episode when the course started and therefore could only complete one test and was past the drop date by the time my severe anxiety subsided. I am also enrolled in CLST 205 and WRIT 125 this summer. As these courses started in May, before this anxiety episode came on, I had already completed most of the course work before I became unable to participate in the course. I was able to work out new due dates for my two outstanding assignments for CLST 205 with Professor Callon and have completed that work. I have contacted Professor Vos for WRIT 125 and have received a Short-Term Academic Consideration from Katie Bala from Student Wellness Services to receive an Incomplete to complete my three outstanding assignments for that course. I contacted Professor MacKay for MUSC 171 and as I am so behind in the course and the course is nearly over, he said he would be able to reasonably support a late-term drop with no academic penalty. My anxiety had not previously affected my academic as I have not suffered from an episode this intense before, however I already have an appointment scheduled with my family doctor to discuss my condition. As well, I plan on maintaining regular appointments with a personal counsellor through Student Wellness Services, who I began seeing last year. I will be discussing signing up with QSAS with my personal counsellor.
I thank you for your time and consideration to review my appeal.
From,
Catherine Gavaris
