Petition Letter
Dear Associate Dean (Studies) of Arts and Science,
I am appealing for aegrotat standing (AG) in the fall term course HLTH 101. I received a major concussion on November 22nd, 2018. The day after, I was in bed in a dark room with a massive headache. I was picked up by my parents and went home two days after the incident. I was in bed for three weeks with no electronics and didn't leave my house. I was unable to do all my extracurricular activities (hockey, volleyball and volunteering), I could not see any of my friends and was unable to be in bright rooms or have loud sounds near me. It was very hard to concentrate and have normal conversation with people without feeling tired, weak and sometimes dizzy. I went to see my doctor during the first week when I was home and that¿¿s when it was confirmed I had a concussion. The week before Christmas, I attempted to start studying for my first semester exams. I was still having bad headaches, so I could not focus for more than 10 minutes at a time. These bad headaches continued up until I came back to school for the semester in January. I went to see my doctor again before I went back on January 7th and she said to take it easy, but I was fine to go back to school and slowly increase my hours studying and my responsibilities. Also, I could not drop this course without penalty, as I passed the date to drop any courses. In January, I had to drop my elective, as I found it extremely difficult to study for my four exams and keep up with other four new courses. I could not see friends and I was missing my extracurriculars to keep up with my school work. I was still having slight headaches up until February 14th,2019. This is when I could study and was back to normal routine with my academics. In the middle of February is when I resumed my extracurriculars
My second semester was very challenging, I am very proud of myself. I persevered with all of the work and stress I had; I stayed very organized and prioritized my school work before anything. I was in contact with Tess Grant throughout this process, a guidance counsellor at Queens who supported me through these tough times and helped me to the best of her abilities. I was able to complete all of my first semester exams and all my work on time for my new courses. For the fall of 2019, my next steps for success are to continue studying very hard, keeping my professors and TA¿¿s updated if I have any future problems and always checking onQ for updates to make sure I stay on task with all of my assignments and courses. I have also attached a screenshot of an email from Michelle Gallant with Dr. Power copied that states Dr. Power supports my appeal and mark in this course.
Sincerely,
Cynthia White
