Dear Associate Dean (Studies),
After a lot of thought and consideration, I have decided to appeal to drop SPAN111 (Fall, 2019).
The last few months have been really difficult and stressful as I¿¿ve been dealing with some personal troubles. Moving away from home has been a huge adjustment and factored in with me being sick for over a month, things got very overwhelming. Without going into too much detail, my mental health played a huge part in why I decided this course was not for me. There have been days where I haven¿¿t left my room, or even my bed due to these issues. Spanish is definitely the most hands-on course I took and that is why it was affected the most. I missed multiple classes along with an assignment and a test which caused my mark to severely suffer. I did not miss the classes because I want to, but because I physically could not force myself to. My professor was able to tell something was wrong from the times that she did see me and she advised me to drop the class as it was the best thing that I could do for myself. I tried my best to remain in the class as I did not want to disappoint my parents and force them to lose more money when they are already struggling as it is. I talked to Arts and Science Considerations about making up the test, but because it passed the three-day time limit there was nothing they could do. I then talked to an advisor, who also believed it was in my best interest to drop SPAN111.
The reason I missed the November 1st deadline was because of the hope I held on to that I could still pass the course. My family has never had a high income and all the money that they saved up is only enough to cover one semester of schooling. I didn¿¿t want them to pay more money if I had the opportunity to even get a 50. However, after a lot of advice from both teachers and advisors I came to the conclusion that I was only hurting myself trying to stick it out. As of two weeks ago, I¿¿ve been talking to a counsellor, Jason Summers, who is helping me resolve my issues and get into the mindset I need to be in to achieve my degree and be successful in my academic life. Jason has also written a letter stating he also believes I should have the opportunity to drop the course. I know without a doubt that the best thing for my mental health is to be removed from this course. I believe my best course of action is to take another course during the winter semester that I will be able to excel in. Now that I have been here for a few months, I feel like I have more of an understanding of how everything works and I¿¿ve found the resources that I need to make sure I am never in this position again. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope that I¿¿ve provided enough details to prove my case.
Sincerely,
Tyler Beuk
