Petition Letter
I am appealing to drop MATH 121(FALL/WINTER,2018) and credit standing to GPHY 102(WINTER,2019).
Reasons, why I apply appeal for those two courses, are listed below. I suffered from serious anxiety and OCD after I graduated from high school (June 2018). Things got worse when I came to Canada since it was my first time living in a different country alone. Mental disorder seriously affected my daily routines. I found hard to sleep during the night and focus in the class. Sometimes, I was even afraid of going to the lecture/tutorial alone or eating at the dining hall by myself. Therefore, I went to see a doctor in March in the student wellness service. As expected, at the end of the first year, I achieved a really bad grade since mental disorder kept frustrating me throughout the whole year. Although I felt better when I went back to my country in summer, mental health issues found me again when I came back to Canada at the beginning of this semester. Therefore, I went to student wellness services again and met Doctor Lett who helped me to get through mental health issues.
Here are some reasons why only these two courses. You can see that my other three courses are generally well. I achieved a B in Drama. They are relatively well, but still not that good. The reason why I can achieve relatively higher grades in the other three courses is that I thought they have fewer workloads and they were relatively easier to get the mark for me. Besides, dropping two of the lowest grades can improve my GPA which can facilitate me to get into the computing and creative arts.
In terms of why I did not drop the course earlier, I had no idea what I was really into the first year. Therefore, I chose to major in economics in the first year for testing water since my parents are all working in economics. As MATH 121 was one of the supportive courses for economics major, I chose it in the first year. Speaking of GPHY 102, I had no idea what I was really into in the first year. It was one of the confusing times in my life. Therefore, I randomly chose GPHY 102 as an elective course for credit. Although I did not achieve a higher grade after fall term ends, I believed my self that I can make things better. I believed that if I continuously searched for the right way such as work out or talk with my friends to release my stress things will be better. Therefore, I also had confidence at that time to make my grades higher. Instead, my confidence did not work. I got a worse life. I cried more often and the pressure was getting more, which put me on the verge of breaking down.
Speaking of the future plan, after the end of the first year, I went back to my country and had a good time with my friends and my family. I have told them what I was going through. They also tried their best to help me get through this setback. Spending four months in my home was fine. Although mental health issues sometimes still bothered me when I was at home, I felt better and so grateful that many people supported me. Besides, after four months of self-thinking and learning when I was in my country, I also realized what I want to learn and what I want to do in the future, which is computing and film. I am taking computing and film courses this year to try to get into the computing and creative arts. I felt better this year even though sometimes I still struggle from the mental disorder , and I worked much harder since I am grateful that there are so many people supporting me and I am getting used to life in Canada. If my mental disorder and anxiety will seriously affect me again, I will go to talk with someone maybe doctor, friend or family members and work out to release those pressure.
Why a term away for academic appeal When I saw my first-year grades, I was broken down. I made many calls to academic advisors. However, I did not get any information about the academic appeal. I knew academic appeal in November from one of my friends, then I went to meet one of the academic advisors confirming that the application of appeal still works.
No matter what happens, I will keep working hard to achieve my dream and try to live the best I can have.Thank you for having an academic appeal chance at the campus. I truly appreciate that from the bottom of my heart.
