Petition Letter
Please excuse my lateness as I was under the impression I was not able to submit an appeal over the Christmas break. (The Appeals office said they were closed and I would not be able to contact them until January.)
Dear Dr. Jenn Stephenson,
I am appealing my grade in Baroque Art (ARTH 253) and the zero grades I received on the Leiden Review and the final essay assignment. I am requesting that both of these assignments be graded and my final course mark adjusted.
On October 20, 2019 I received a call informing me that a close family member had a sudden and serious medical issue and was being hospitalized. The medical concern was dire that I had no choice but to leave campus to return home to support my family. I was away from campus for a period of two weeks. When I returned to my studies, I found it challenging to concentrate and catch up on my readings and assignments.
During the time I was absent, I missed the due date for the Leiden Review that was to be submitted by October 25, 2019. This was the only assignment due while I was away. (I did complete the assignment, however I was too late to submit it on time.) So I reached out via email to Professor Alexander Bailey to explain my situation. I did not receive a response. In an attempt to resolve this concern, I contacted Professor Norman Vorano, the Art History Department Head via email. He stated that he would connect me with Professor Bailey. Shortly after, I received an email response from Professor Bailey asking if I had any questions. I sent back an email explaining my circumstances but did not receive a response.
In regards to the final essay assignment, I was unaware that it was to be submitted in class. It is my understanding that this instruction was shared during a class I missed. Upon completion of the assignment, I realized there was no dropbox available on ONQ, so I submitted it via email directly to Professor Bailey. While the assignment was two days late, it was completed and the record of the email still exists.
Dealing with family illness has been overwhelming. In October and November I felt so stressed and anxious about what could possibly happen. As a result of these extenuating circumstances, I found it difficult to manage my workload. However, I've since been working harder to complete my coursework.
I am currently under a physician's care and I have attached a medical note below. I am trying to maintain my academic life at Queen's while supporting my family. I appreciate your time and I look forward to hearing from you.
