Petition Letter
I am writing you regarding my Statistics course. I am seeking whatever assistance and guidance you can offer.
Statistics is the only course I still require in order to graduate. It is the only course in, my entire 4 years at Queen¿¿s, that I have failed. Having already failed statistics, and knowing it wasn¿¿t my strong point, I did everything in my power to set myself up for success this year. I took many steps to mitigate this deficiency. After dropping a course to dedicate more time but still failing statistics last year I took online courses during the summer in order to get my number of credits back to where it should be but was careful to not take statistics because I believe that in person teaching was critical to my ability to succeed in statistic.
Despite having worked the last 2 years of my schooling, I forwent the opportunity to work this year in order devote more time my studies in general and statistics in particular. Some examples of steps I have taken in attempt to have more success this term are as follows:
I solicited tutoring help with my pre-med housemate.
I sacrificed leisure time and activities with friends in order to allot more time to my studies.
I have sought assistance from both the TA and Professor throughout this semester.
1st Assignment
There are 4 assignments, equally weighted, in this course. All assignments have partners. Groups are made up of 2-3 students. My partner dropped the class and I was left to do the assignment on my own, without someone to confirm and verify my work. I also had to complete all of the assignment, in the allotted time, on my own, effectively doing two or three times the work of my peers.
2nd Assignment
I was assigned a new partner. This partner was irresponsible and academically stunted. We would have passed the assignment but despite my submitting my portion of the assignment to my partner on time, she did not have her portion done, and did not hand the assignment in on time, causing us to receive an automatic late penalty.
3rd Assignment.
Unfortunately, once again I found myself paired with the same statistically stunted partner, I stressed with her the importance of submitting the assignment in on time. This time it was not only the content that cause issues within our group, but we also found ourselves in the middle of an epidemic.
As a result of Covid-19 I now found my classes, which are absolutely critical for my learning, were cancelled or moved online.
My pre-med tutor was no longer able to continue tutoring me, as he had to adjust his learning/study habits, in order accommodate his lack of classroom instruction.
Due to distancing and other government rules, I had no opportunity to engage a professional Statistics tutor to fill in my learning lapse.
Failed assignment 3. Work was handed in on time, but is was a Hail Mary, as the critical classroom instruction was absent. The school had taken away 2 weeks of class instruction necessary for me to pass the class.
While the school was kind to enough to give students a week of transition assignment due dates did not shift and therefore not only was I not given classroom, in person, instruction but now we had a week initially allotted for class with no instruction at all
Assignment 4
Due to previous assignment marks, I must get an A to pass the class. Due to Covid19 distancing rules, I am left on my own, without help. No in class instruction. No one-on-one academic tutor. No professional Statistics tutor. This is not what I paid for. I am doing everything in my power currently to attempt a passing grade but fear that once again it is not possible. I have tried every resource I can find, asked every friend but continue to find myself unsupported. I am sacrificing time that is also needed to pass my other courses and dedicating it to statistics in order to just pass this course. I attend every lecture and work hard on all assignments. I am not strong in Statistics, but I believe I would have gotten through were it not for the circumstances listed above. I believe the University has failed me.
I am requesting every tool the university can afford me to help me pass Statistics and graduate.
