Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Stephenson,
I am appealing to drop ENGL 100 (Summer 2019).
During the summer I experienced a flare up in my condition which affected my ability to meet academic and social responsibilities. I have been managing anxiety and depression throughout my university career, however due to increased pressure and stress from a full time summer student position and MCAT preparation my symptoms increased and I could not balance anything. I would sleep at unusual times, have low appetite and energy and inability to focus due to feelings of guilt and dread. During this period I was also transitioning to a new medication which could have impacted my symptoms. The period when I was most symptomatic was between the 1st week of July to the last week of August. I was extremely discouraged after receiving a C on the first essay that I had put a lot of effort into because it was focused on a novel and topic I was very passionate about. I did not drop the course before the deadline because I thought that my grade could be improved by the final exam. English is not within my discipline, however I felt this was my only option as there are no summer courses offered within my discipline that I haven't already taken.
To complete my degree, I have been in touch with counsellors and doctors at Queen's and in Toronto and I have found successful strategies to manage acute episodes such as medication and regular counselling. I plan to complete the remaining six credits at Athabasca University over the summer and I have submitted a LOP to request courses in Environmental Studies, Indigenous Education, Ecology, Conservation and Global Studies are reviewed.
Thank you for your consideration,
Cristina Cacciola
