Dear Dr. Barbara Crow,
Letter of Appeal
I am writing to you to appeal my grade for my final assignment in SOCY 122. I received my grade for assignment three on Friday, May 1st, and was completely shocked and disappointed with the mark I received. I received a fail and reached out to my Professor and TA to ask why and how I did so poorly. I am writing with the hope that after you hear my arguments that you will take a final look at my assignment and reinstate me with the mark I deserve. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to explain my circumstances.
This semester has been an extremely difficult one for me, this assignment was originally due in March but unfortunately, I was hospitalized March 1-13th due to my chronic sickle cell disease. After being discharged from the hospital it took me several weeks to regain strength and the ability to finish all the assignments that I missed. I emailed Ms. Christiana Salvantis and Dr. Sachil Sing on March 4th asking for an extension for the assignment, I was granted an extension for March 30th. With everything going on with the global pandemic, I had to return home and deal with my responsibilities at home. Unfortunately, I have a mentally ill mother and have to take constant care of her, with that being said I asked for another extension for April 13, 2020. With that being said, I normally never ask for extensions I am very good with time management but unfortunately situations beyond my control I needed more time for the assignment. After being granted the final extension, I worked on my paper endless and finally submitted it. On May 1st, I received my grade as F24 and was completely heartbroken. I have never received such a low mark; sociology is one of my best classes and I was in disbelief. I emailed Ms. Salavantis asking the reasoning behind my low mark and she sent me the edits, unfortunately, I forgot to put in-text citations in my assignment which made her believe that my assignment was full of plagiarism.
I take full responsibility for my actions; I indeed was not intentionally plagiarizing my work. A lot was going on in my life with finals, exams, my mothers illness, and the pandemic. I did not double-check my work and it has cost me a major mistake. This has taught me a huge lesson to always proofread my work and always use in-text citations. After emailing Ms. Salavantis, she forwarded my concerns to Professor Sachil. Dr. Sachil emailed me on May 2 saying that he would give me the benefit of the doubt that I did not meaningfully plagiarism and will allowing me to make edits to my assignment. Dr. Sachil stated that even with all the edits I make to my document the highest mark I may receive is a D-.
I have completely redone the assignment and I am writing to you today to plead for a remark. I firmly believe that the new assignment that I have done deserves higher than a D- and I sincerely ask you to take a look at the assignment and you will agree. I take all responsibility for my actions; I truly do, but with the entire COVID-19 situation it has been a stressful situation. I truly am a good student, if you take a look at my file, I am involved in the school community and have good grades. I am an admission officer for the student diversity committee, sponsorship team for MUSE magazine, and a Don all for this upcoming school year.
Before this assignment, my grade in the class was a B-. That being said if I get a D- my grade will significantly drop; this will be detrimental as I need to pick a major shortly and I wanted to major in sociology. If I receive a D-, I will not be able to pick sociology as my major. My goal has always been to go into sociology and then law school. My biggest goal in life is criminal law and advocating for people who do not have a voice. Today I am advocating for myself, I truly believe that I deserve a higher mark. I am sincerely apologetic for my mistakes and have done a completely new and fresh assignment. I understand the significance of my actions, but we all make mistakes and it would be a shame if my first mistake as a university student would cost and jeopardize my major.
